Recently I had dinner with a friend of mine and he was describing his experience from the past week. He has moved from a property he owned into the town nearby and has been visiting his old place every 3 or 4 weeks, apparently this has not been regular enough. A neighbour from the old property phoned him and reported that some of his possessions appeared to be missing, ie a boat he had tied up by the jetty and an old car he was garaging. My friend hastily visited his old place and observed a note on the front door stating, This house is for rent, please apply to,Ms .........at this number............ Obviously my friend still had a key so he went in and was impressed about how clean and tidy it had become. He took a note of the phone number off the front door and promptly phoned Ms.............. The conversation went something like this, Hello I am inquiring about the house you have for rent, 'Yes I am in charge of this property, are you interested in renting? my friend, I might be, what happened to the owner of the property? Oh, he died 7 years ago. My friend gasped, he was sure he was not dead these 7 years. Without giving anything away my friend hung up from the phone and straight away contacted the police. He explained to them he was the owner of this property and someone was trying to rent it out. Little did the woman know that my friend is a lawyer. So far as we know the police have visited this woman and hopefully she is in handcuffs at this point. My friend and all of us are eagerly awaiting the final outcome!!!!!! More to follow.

I hope that the problem is over. In Italy it is dangerous to leave the house even only for a couple of weeks of vacation because you can find your apartment squatted by illegals.

@LadyDuck I know in UK this can happen, squatters will squat or you rent out a place and then can't get rid of the tenants. Funny old world isn't it?

@glenniah Yes, this happens all the time in several European countries. It's a serious problem.
