Songs we sing to babies (and cats)

Can you remember what songs your mum (or dad) used to sing to you when you were little? Or if you're a parent, what songs do you or did you sing to your own children? This morning a Madness song came on the radio and it reminded me of how much my daughter used to love Madness when she was a tot. If she was crying, I only had to put on a dubious Cockney accent and sing along to - "I wish this bus'd get a move on, driver's taking his time" (from the song 'Cardiac Arrest') and she would be chortling again. She made me feel like the world's funniest comedian (and not many people do that!) There were quieter songs for bedtime. Robbie Williams' 'Angels' had its uses. Sometimes my niece would like me to sing to her, but when her own mum tried to sing, she used to say, "Mummy stop!" When my cat, Charlie, was a kitten last summer I would sing to him on occasions. 'The Gnome' from Pink Floyd's debut album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, was my song of choice. I don't know how much Charlie appreciated it, but he certainly spent a lot of time sleeping on my lap. I think the late Syd Barrett would probably approve. Apparently he loved cats.

I hardly remember my mom singing to me, but my grandma used to do it. I don't know the name of the songs she sang, but I do remember watching her sing the same song to all of the babies that were around. I found it really interesting how they all remained so calm after that.

@5thHouse My mom probably sang to me as well, but it's weird that the memories of my grandma are more vivid.

I remember my gran singing to me: "Bobby shafto's gone to sea, silver buckles on his knee" and "they're changing guards at Buckingham Palace, Christopher Robin went down with Alice."

My dad was hardly ever home because he worked a long distance. My mom worked at home and her home job kept her busy. We had a lot of records in the house and I listened to the radio. Don't remember them singing to me. As for my kids, I didn't do much singing. But my husband loved to play his guitar for them and he would make up songs. It was cute!

That's sweet. My husband used to put some little speakers in my daughters cot and play his own music to her, which was quite soothing

I don't remember my mother singing to us as babies. I didn't sing to my kids very much because I'm not that good of a singer.
