Border Collies are the workaholics of Dogdom. They are always badgering their owners for entertainment or, even better, some work to do. One of my colleagues when I was working for a pet publishing company had four Working Sheepdogs/ Border Collies (Working Sheepdogs being Border Collies who don’t quite make it into pedigree circles) and one of them was on its way to becoming an Obedience Champion. The rapport she had with her dogs was truly amazing! This breed is highly intelligent, and leaving such dogs to their own devices amounts almost to cruelty. Anyway, this is the preamble to the following story: I was walking across the local park yesterday when I saw a lovely Border Collie with his owner. He was playing the usual Chase the Ball game. I don’t think this collie was in the running to become an Obedience Champion, as he didn’t want to give up the ball. He retrieved it, came up to his owner, and then ran off again, complete with ball. He then did that characteristically collie belly-to-the-ground flop, waited until his owner had nearly caught up with him – and then ran off again. His owner was beginning to lose patience by this time, and her friend was coming towards him from the other direction. Obviously, different tactics were needed. Stopping by a tree, our hero dropped the ball, turned around - and peed on it! He’d obviously realised that this both claimed the ball as his and that, though he had no objection to picking it up, his owner and her friend might have one or two qualms. Now, that’s an intelligent dog!

@Vivenda Dogs do like leadership. That's why many of them do well with obedience work.

Well I certainly wouldn't have been keen on carrying it home after that, Janet!

@Vivenda Definitely! I hate to see Border Collies on leads in suburbia or cities. I'm sure some must be dying slowly of frustration.

I like this story. I try to avoid the encounter with border collies, they love to corner people and it's hard to get rid of them, but they are nice funny dogs.

As I said in the last two comments, I've had one or two narrow escapes from being rounded up as I've crossed the path. My husband had a dog that had a a certain amount of collie in its mix when he was a boy. One day, he came back home to find that Patch, who had been left in the garden on a long lead, had rounded up a casual caller (a Jehovah's Witness, I believe) and not allowed her to leave until sternly commanded by the family!

Sounds like one pissed-off hound, and a very pissed-on ball...

Very true! I didn't stop to see whether the owner picked up the ball afterwards!

Good one. I share life with an Australian CattleDog- some folks call her breed a Heeler. She would not have piddled on her ball. She would have delivered it to me at top speed then expected me to zip it back into the air. Sally is a work acholic when it comes to ball play.

My ex-colleague's dogs were like that, Lenore. She was "pack leader", and they all seemed to be waiting for her instructions all the time.

LOL, love the story. They are amazing dogs. Smart. I had one corner me at a barbecue one evening. He didn't let me leave the area until his owner returned home.

They're good at that, aren't they? I've escaped one or two attempts by collies to round me up as I've crossed the park!
