My wife just read the news about about 70 people in the Mid Atlantic area stricken ill with Hep A from imported Egyptian strawberries.
Can you believe this? I can. It is horrible. There were a number of places that bought the tainted strawberries and now several have been hospitalized with Hepatitis A.
I think I would prefer my strawberries from a local farm in the area not all the way from the other side of the planet, much less, carrying the Hep A virus. What a terrible thing this is.
Look at the article from the Washington Post below:
As of early Friday morning, there were 70 confirmed cases. Most are in Virginia. More are expected, as the virus can takes weeks to present symptoms.

That is pretty bad. I am not sure why we are getting strawberries from Egypt anyway. There are plenty closer than that!

I agree. I would like to actually know where my fruit comes from when I shop at local stores for it. I think most store clerks haven't a clue. But there are actually some clerks at Kroger who do in fact know where most of their produce comes from. I find it kind of funny that so many in fact are clueless.

I'm glad that the company took quick action and stopped using the infected strawberries. Hopefully all infected people recover.

@lookatdesktop It seems that the Hep. A is caused by fecal matter then something went definitely wrong in the quality control.

I do too. Anyone of us could have been subject to this and I know I value the health of my liver. Hepatitis A can be treated much easier than Hep C. It is bad enough to be considered a serious health threat to any community and thus, the thing I worry most about is the poor quality control taking place that would lead to such a thing as this.

Wow!!! Unreal!! I'm only now hearing about this, but wow - so unfortunate. There is so much availability of strawberries during the summer months. Why buy frozen!? yikes! A wish of wellness to those affected. Xx

I am only glad they found out in time. I think we are getting better at tracing down the origins of food from other countries so we can nip things in the bud.
