This is why self defense is important

I began to study Karate when I was about 5-I only took steady lessons for a year (as I said, I was 5), but after about age 9 I began taking lessons at the same place for about 6 weeks every year after that...and after that, I kept it up until the present time.
Over the years I had let's say, a strong interest in it...but I never really understood a practical use for it.
Aside from schoolyard bullies and stuff like that, in my adult life I was only ever attacked once...so the words "cool but useless" kinda came to mind.
A few days ago not far from where I live, there was a home invasion/robbery-and then it kinda clicked in my head "oh...yeh, that could be useful?"
Where we are, if one was to call 911...it would take a while for the police to come...as well as an ambulance.
When people tend to think of self defense they usually think of crazy high kicks, or punches, or otherwise wounding a person...but in reality sometimes it can just mean knowing how to trip someone so that they stumble for a moment and then running and getting out of a situation and getting help.
It seems like a useless skill but in reality...you never really know.

I was surprised to find out that I could still do things like a shoulder roll-although, it hurt a lot more then I remember when I was younger;)

Haha. I agree. I don't know how to roll anymore.

@JustBhem I actually didn't either, but...my body did;). A lot of it, oddly, it's muscle memory and not so much in the head...and when I went to do it, I suppose my body still remembered how, like the sensation of the movement and when, and then it just happened...but still, well, as I said, that is one thing I don't recommend because well, it was a great feeling of "wow I did it!" followed by a horrible feeling of "ouch, I did it."

Self defense is a useful skill to have as long as it's not excessive.
