A Wren Comes to Visit

I've been away two days and I'll write more about that later but for now here is a photo of a little wren that came to eat bugs on the car while I was waiting for Vince. Luckily I had my camera next to me and was able to take half a dozen shots, one of which turned out okay although when cropped it is a bit blurry. This is a female 'Splendid' fairy wren. There are a number of species including the 'Superb', 'Splendid' and 'Lovely' wrens which prompted my son to ask if there was a 'Plain' or 'Downright Ugly' version. We have wrens in our garden too and they can become very tame to the point of feeding from your hand. Ours haven't got to that stage yet although we keep hoping.

My birdbook lists 9 species, not all of which are found in our area. And yes, this just might be the year!

It would be so enjoyable if they come and eat in your hands; it could relieve stress.

I think it would. How could one be stressed with a tiny bird eating out of your hand?

I would only know Australian birds and only some of them. I have a bird book but again it's only for Australian birds. Even birds with the same names vary from country to country. The birds called robins in the US, UK and Australia are all different.

I would love to be able to feed a bird from my hand. I'm not sure if we have wrens here as I probably wouldn't know one if I saw it. We do have a lot of sparrows.

There are handheld hummingbird feeders available that work (with a lot of patience).

@JamesHxstatic I have just decided we need a feeding table near the bird bath. I'd have a much better chance of getting nice photos too.

They are only tiny but hop around your feet like they own the place. Their image is put on everything here and some Shires have adopted them as mascots etc.

@JudyEv Maybe if they discover a new variety they could name it a Grotesque Wren.

The male is much brighter. Here's another bad photo of a male and either a female or maybe a young one seeing it seems to be being fed.

Thanks. With my little point and shoot I often take it normally then crop it. If I try to zoom up too much, I can't hold it steady enough not to blur it.

I'm not sure what you're saying. Are you saying birds should be free? I don't like them to be caged - unless it is a very big aviary so they have plenty of room to fly around.

We don't see wrens very often. Many years ago though one of my cats managed to catch one and seemed ridiculously proud of himself. I was not amused
