How important are brithdays anyways?

Why do we celebrate birthdays? Sometimes it feels like all that has happened is that I have moved one - year closer to death and not really done much with this life. Is the celebration because I survived so far? Battled the odds and lived to see another day? My own birthday leaves me feeling a sense of helpless sadness. I run away and go into hiding . But there are times when I guess a small and silly gift would bring about that silver lining.
