Someone Tried To Order Online With My Kohl's Card

Yes, you heard me right. I got a letter today from Kohl's fraud control. Being the suspicious type, I got out my Kohl's card and called the number on the back. It did not match the number the letter told me to call.
It seems the letter is real and someone in New York tried to place an order to be delivered to their house, using my card. Luckily the order was not approved. But, now I need to be concerned about how they got my number. I did place an online order in August for a dress for my daughter's birthday.
They wanted to password my card for online and in-store purchases. I declined that since it would be quite aggravating. I will however, change my online password. Seriously, couldn't they just ask to see my license in the store?
Anyway, I am glad they didn't allow the order to go through. I have been ordering online for more than 20 years and this is the first issue I have ever had.
How about you?

I was hoping that Kohls would do the same but that is not what they do!! Weird but true.

@BelleStarr I would ask Kohls for a new card since your current card's number someone else has for peace of mind

Yes apparently so but it was so plain it was hard to tell and when I looked up the number on the Internet it wasn't clear whether it was a scam number or not, very confusing.

Thankfully I have never had that happen. I'm glad their order didn't go through.

They didn't use my card, they tried to use my online account. I did suggest they reissue me a new card but they said no, it wasn't necessary.

@BelleStarr If they only tried to use your online account, I think that changing the password should be enough. I receive emails confirmations for the orders I place online, so it's not an order I placed, I can immediately stop the order and they can inquiry.

I had that happen to me recently at a company I order online from on a frequent basis. I had noticed a charge on my account statement that seemed suspicious. I immediately went to my bank, and they immediately called the company. It turns out that we had called them just in time, as the fraudulent order was about to ship out. My first thought was to tell them to cancel the order since it was fraudulent, but the quick-thinking bank employee asked the company to contact the police, explain to them what was going on, and have them waiting at the address where the fraudulent order was to be shipped. The company then shipped the order, and then when it arrived the police arrested the people who accepted the order. It turns out they were part of a local crime ring, and the police found thousands of dollars of other merchandise in their house as well. Thankfully, I got everything straightened out, and changed all the passwords to my online accounts, and the police busted an internet crime ring!

@BelleStarr I'm sure most of the time they never end up catching the thieves, because they are pretty smart and keep moving on to different stores and locations so as not to be caught. Internet or online fraud is a lucrative business for smart crooks, because they know it is hard to track them down.

@BelleStarr My mother used to order from QVC years ago. I've done Target, Sears and Amazon mostly. Hmm.

good job the company were sharp enough to realize it was an issue - happened to me and my step-father once with two independent bank cards from seperate banks - we found out someone was going through the bins - we used a shredder ever after though I still need one for my new place

@epiffanie I am not convinced it is as easy to resolve a problem with pay pal as it is with a credit card.

They have a special phone number for fraud apparently, but they connected me internally.

A friend of mine had her credit card used by someone else. They got the card number when she used the gas pump. If she had gone inside to pay for her gas using her credit card, they would not have been able to get her number. But since she paid at the pump, they got it somehow. I don't know how it works but I do know that it was such a hassle for her. They were overseas on a cruise trying to use her card.

They have skimmers now that they place on gas pumps and other machines we put our cards into and then they have our information, it is scary.

@BelleStarr That is scary. I never pay for gas at the pump anymore. At the time the police told her to always pay inside.

Thank goodness they spotted it before that person got away with theft. I have been lucky so far touch wood although just once the bank contacted me to ask if I had made a withdrawel at 3am one morning but my account did not show anything I suspect the bank already dealt with it.

They are opening a fraud case so I hope they intend to try to prosecute these potential thieves.

@RubyHawk That is what normally happens but of course, this is a store charge not a master card or visa.

@BelleStarr My son had a card hacked but they used it in his area and the charge went through. they took it off the charge and gave him a new card number when he notified the company.

It is really good that the fraud control department caught it, I think you can be grateful for that.

Yes that is the good news, it would have been a nightmare to correct if the order had gone through.

Yes it is common enough but didn't they replace you card or change the number, not changing mine seems silly.

@BelleStarr No, they didn't suggest it even. Maybe we should have but we haven't had any more trouble.

I wasn't really alert, the company was alert. I would have had no way to know about the attempt.
