The Rest Of Our Lives

A couple of days ago, my brother and I had a very serious discussion. What did we want the rest of our lives to be like? We both came to the same decision that we wanted to start traveling more.
My brother is going to start saving the bonus' he gets every few months and then next year he wants to buy us an RV. Neither one of us can do the camping with a tent thing because of health issues and my age. He wants an RV instead of a camper that he has to pull behind a truck. He said if we have to go anywhere, he would call Uber to take us. I don't really think that is a good idea and that we should pull the car behind the RV. We will see what happens.
We both want to visit every state and see every major attraction in that state. I know that it will probably take us quite a while to accomplish all of this but that's okay as we aren't in any hurry. Have you thought about what you want the rest of your life to be like?

I have also been thinking this over quite a lot lately. I have been unhappy in my job over the past year, and then when my father passed away several weeks ago, it really got me to thinking. I figure I'm about half way through my life now, and I want to figure out what I want to do with myself for all those remaining years. I'm in a place now where I'm not really happy, so over the next few years I have some real soul-searching to do. And, being a single father of two kids, it's not always just so simple to quit a job or move to a new area or things like that. I actually have to plan this out carefully. But, I have decided that I do want to get out and enjoy the great outdoors more.

I know exactly what you mean. I felt that way a lot when my kids were young. I was a single Mom and it was really hard. I wanted to explore new places but couldn't do that with kids that I was responsible for. I had to put it on the back burner until now. I hope you are able to figure it out and don't have to wait until you are my age.

@moffittjc That is true, it's important to get your job situation worked out first. And, when the time comes to be able to do fun things, your kids probably would enjoy it also.

@simone10 Before I got married and had kids, I do a lot of traveling, went on lots of adventures. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed those types of experiences. I'd like to start doing more of those things, and now that my kids are teenagers, they can join in with me if they like. But I've got to figure out my job situation first. Got to get the baseline things situated first, and then I can plan for all the fun stuff after that!

Pulling a car behind an RV makes driving and parking more difficult. I like his idea.

@ElizabethWallace We may feel that way after a while but right now we have the traveling bug. Neither of us have traveled very much.

@simone10 My sister and brother-in-law loved theirs, but I would rather stay home than travel that way.

I remember that we looked at the RV, they are very expensive and anyway not the best to drive in small European countries. Anyway considering that you have to consider to spend around 100,000$ for a medium RV I wonder if it's not a better idea to drive by car and stops at motels.

We travel when ever we can usually in the winter going south. i see many pulling a RV/Camper behind their car, I am still a tent person so I still camp every summer. Never thought of buying a RV but it is a good idea... @JudyEv does it all the time, I love reading her tales of travel.

@PainsOnSlate Cots would be a lot better than sleeping bags. I can imagine how hard it is to have to put up a tent. I don't blame you for going with an RV.

I'm in my 70's but about 10 years ago we bought cots to sleep on. That certainly made life better, but now we wre getting old enough just p[utting up the tent is a killer..... we might have to go to a RV soon. @simone10 I

This sounds a great idea. I do hope it works out for you. It is hard to know whether a motor-home or car and caravan is the best choice. If we sell the bus one day, we'll need to decide if we are going to replace it and if so, with what.

I would prefer a camper that would be pulled behind a vehicle but like my brother said, we would probably have to buy a truck to be able to pull a camper. What he really wants is an RV that he can drive and not worry about pulling anything. It would able be great for the dogs.

@simone10 When we were looking at doing some touring with a caravan/camper etc that was our problem too. We wanted a caravan with a toilet and shower and most were too heavy to be towed safely by the car we had. But if you buy a motor-home and have to sell the car to do it, you then can't take passengers and you have to do all your running around/shopping with the motor-home. We could afford a second-hand bus and Vin reckoned he could convert it himself so that's what we went for.

I envy you because you have a companion. I don't have any, but I want to travel around the world and meet new friends. I would also like to spend my life writing what I want to write and watching my shares in stocks grow. I would also like to live in a peaceful place where I can plant veggies and fruit trees. I have so many plans aside from those I mentioned, but I don't know when I can accomplish them all.

@simone10 By the time you figure the cost of the actual vehicle, the extra dollars spent on fuel and the insurance, not to mention your camping lot fees, I think that travelling by car and staying in hotels is more economical, and is certainly easier.

i'm glad y'all talked 'bout such, hon. the hubs's greatly disappointed with my health hiccups, already complainin' that i've ruined his retirement plans... fer myself? i'd rather 've a camper to pull 'hind 'n still 've a vehicle. those rv's 're a beast to find a parkin' place fer sometimes.
whilst i'd love to go gallivantin' 'cross the countryside, what i'd really like 's peace 'n quiet....wonder where i'd find such?

I would rather have a camper too but for some reason, he wants an RV. He may change his mind when the times comes...I hope so. Maybe you and your husband could go on mini trips during the times when you are feeling better? I agree, peace and quiet is what I would like too.

My main goal is to get all my bills paid before I retire from my main job. After that, I'd like to visit with people I know wherever they are living and visit a few states, yes, but I've been to several already. I figure I'll revisit those and see new places in the next life.

That sounds wonderful. That is actually the same way that my fiance and I want to spend our lives once we retire. We are going to sell everything we have and hit the road with no destination in mind. We would love to travel across Canada and the US.

Ideally, a published book and a chance to travel the World promoting it - more likely my future will be a run of temping jobs, bouts of unemployment and modest success on the performance scene with occasional writing getting into print

I have also been thinking about this after my retirement in ten to twelve years or so. First I wish myself to be in good health in the first place. Under that condition, I would like to go traveling with my wife around our own country first as it is big enough with so much for us to see and if possible, we may travel to somwhere far in foreign countries. I am looking forward to my retired life without having to worry so much about my busy and intense work, free of stress.

That was a wonderful plan. Probably, you might want to include the question, "What for?" I mean if you travel a lot and visit other good places in the world, what do you want to accomplish? Does it help some people or some other causes that can uplift humanity? I ask this because I read about successful people and they have something in common: they are doing something that uplift the lives of others and I see them happy doing it. What do you think about it?
