Woke Up to a Tropical Storm Sitting Over Us

Either things happen really, really fast, or I have been completely clueless as to what has been going on with the weather here lately. Yesterday was hot and sunny here in Florida (with our typical afternoon thunderstorms), but when I woke up this morning, it was pouring down rain. Looking at the Weather Channel, it turns out that Tropical Storm Julia formed over the northeast coast of Florida overnight. It actually formed over land, which is highly unusual.
The storm is drifting northeast over the coast of Florida and Georgia. Due to the center of the storm being over land, there is little chance for further development right now. The main effects from this storm will be rains and breezy conditions.
I hope our myLot friends in Jacksonville are safe today, and not flooded out from all the rain!
Have you ever woken up to a surprise weather system that you hadn't expected?

We have had thunderstorms predicted since Sunday night. They arrived around 4:30 this morning. I am never surprised at Kansas weather.

Yes, I would be very concerned about Kansas weather if I lived out there! All my friends who live in that state tell me how unpredictable the weather can be. Other than tropical storms and hurricanes (which we can see coming), most of Florida's weather is predictable: hot and humid, and then afternoon thunderstorms that you can set your watch to! lol

We rarely get snow here in western Oregon, so when a forecast calling for rain in January goes wrong, we sometimes wake up to a white surprise.

But it's usually a pleasant surprise, right? In our case, waking up and hearing that a tropical storm formed over your head overnight without any prior warning is cause for alarm!

@JamesHxstatic Well, if you believe the so-called "experts," you will always be waiting for that next Big One, which they always claim will take place in 10 minutes!

@moffittjc That is for certain. Our biggest danger is the 9+ earthquake that could happen in the next 50 years or the next ten minutes.

I'm in Jacksonville and all is well here. We got rain and some wind but nothing too bad. It's cloudy and humid this morning, not raining again so far.

I was hoping you and your family would be safe and sound in Jax! Glad to hear it wasn't too bad for you! Did you see the video clip on the Weather Channel where they showed New Smyrna Beach? It looked like a hurricane was hitting that city! lol

We're in for some thunderstorms over the next few days, but no wind or anything damaging. So, nothing too bad, it was just very surprising that this thing developed overnight without any prior warning.

I saw about that storm this morning on facebook. I was shocked that y'all are having another storm.

I think South Carolina needs to keep an eye on this one. It looks like it is going to sit off the coast of SC for the next couple of days. Luckily, all the rain right now is off in the ocean, but you never know what can happen with these storms. They seem to have a mind of their own and often do very unpredictable things!

Didn't you just get a lot of rain from the remnants of hurricane Hermine, or did that not really dump a lot of rain on you?

@NJChicaa Lucky you! We took a hit here in Florida, but it could have been much worse. Thankfully, it was only a minimal hurricane when it hit us. Well, I hope you get the rain you need soon!

It's a little drizzly here this morning, but thankfully, the heavy rain is just offshore of Jacksonville on the east side of the storm. The west side of tropical systems usually don't pack as much of a punch, so thankfully that's the side I'm sitting on right now! lol

Ahh, thanks for thinking about me! My first thought when I heard about the storm was whether or not @LovingMyBabies was okay, since she lives in Jacksonville where the center of the storm developed, but I saw a comment from her today where she mentioned they were perfectly fine!

Rain always puts me to sleep, but if there is thunder, I won't be able to sleep. I am a very light sleeper, so the clap of thunder would wake me up and then keep me awake.

@just4him I'm such a light sleeper, I could hear a pin drop on the other side of the house and it would wake me up! lol
I never used to be that way until I had kids. Prior to kids, I could sleep through WWIII and not wake up! But I had to train myself to wake up easily, because my wife and I would split baby duties in the middle of the night, and I had to make sure I would wake up whenever the baby needed to be fed and changed in the middle of the night! Unfortunately, I've never been able to "un-train" myself after they got bigger! lol

@moffittjc I'm a heavy sleeper, so the thunder would need to be very loud or the timing of it would need to be near my normal waking time for me to hear it. It was that this morning when thunder and lightning rolled through around 4 AM a couple hours before I was ready to get up.
