Guess They Won't Get Anymore Money From Me!

Like most Americans, I like to share my blessings by giving to charities. And, like most Americans, I don't give haphazardly. I have a few firm and stringent rules for giving money. First and foremost, I won't give any money to an organization that raises $300 million in a year and keeps $269 million of it for themselves (hello, Wounded Warrior Project, I'm talking about you). Those places need to be good stewards of the money they're receiving out of the generosity of people who could easily be spending that $20 on dinner or a movie. Another thing that I have a serious problem with is giving to charities that, I guess you would call it, over advertise. If you can afford to spend $300,000 on a 60-second TV commercial then you don't really need my Abe Lincoln. That's what has happened with a charity that, until now, I felt rather comfortable in donating to. However, this week I received three mailings from them...and a phone call. Telemarketers make about $10-$14 an hour (or that's what the temp agency I work for pays...yeah, my temp agency pays well, but that is the general rate that other temp agencies advertise for). Now, if they're hired through a temp agency that cost is more about $60 an hour (because you have to pay the temp agency employees' salary as well as the temp working for you). If they work for the company they're still getting a good sum, thanks to things like benefits. Bottom line: it costs money to hire people to call an ask for money. So I guess they won't be getting anymore money from me. I'm donating the money to feed the hungry, not to pay overhead. Here's a song about what I feel happened. Yes, the temptation was to use the Pink Floyd song but that was too obvious.
On April 9th, 2008, Steve Miller Band was awarded the Golden Note by ASCAP, recognizing great achievements by a band over their careers. After receiving the ...

good choice of song - too many charities are just thinly disguised business administrations and expenses accounts

I object to donating to big charities working in Third World countries where the admin run around in massive great 4WDs that never go out in the field.

I don't know the charity so not sure on this but, many charities have people who give of their time to call and ask for many. They don't get a dime. I know because I have done it.

It is hard to decide how to donate money.

I need to pay more attention when donating.
