Gas station put $75 hold on my credit card?

Usually when I put gas in my tank, I use debit where I have to enter my pin #. Once in a while I process as credit. Really can't say why, but maybe cause it's a little bit faster. I have never noticed this before, but my husband was going over our transactions online later that day, and was freaking out cause there was a $75 charge, which only left less then $10 in our checking account. We are on a paycheck to paycheck situation right now. I think a lot of people are. He went to the bank next day to find out what was going on and she told him it was because the gas station where I got gas put a $75 hold on my credit card because I used credit instead of debit. She said they do that because there is a little bit more of a lag time using credit instead of debit. They want to make sure they get there money, so they slap on the 75 hold. This must have just hit our little corner of Indiana. Anyone else experience this? Gas stations are the only ones that do this as far as I know. What a rip off~

I think usually that hold is gone pretty quickly, so I never worry about it.

You are right. It doesn't last long. But if you are not aware of it and your balance is already low, and you use your card then get in the negative, it can trigger all kinds of fees.

I didn't know they are allowed to do that... I've never experienced this... I notice it does take longer for credit to clear, but my bank always takes just the amount charged on hold, not a cent more...
