Boys' night out rocks my world!

Do you ever do a boys' or girls' night out? My stereotype is that boys like to talk sports and girls like to dance, but that's not always how it is. Tonight, I was simultaneously visited by my 72-year-old retired engineer friend and my 7-1/2-year-old neighbor friend. What's an order of magnitude when it comes to friends? We discussed wood surfaces. We worked on the table on my balcony. We sipped wine, wine, and water. We sang "When I was one, I had some fun, and I went out to sea/ I jumped aboard a pirate ship and that captain said to me..." We did not discuss sports. We did not dance. It was good. Do you ever do a boys' night our or a girls' night out? What's it like?

The last boys night out I had was when I attended a ping pong tournament at a bar with my friend Tom. He won, beating an opponent far younger than his 80 years. We are considering going again with reinforcements

Reinforcement, as in young guys in their 50s? Sounds like fun!

What's the saying? 'The old man smiles again and the young one gains experience'. Have you heard it? Sounds very appropriate here. :)

I prefer a mixture of company. It looks like you have one of our coffee tables there!

I wouldn't tell him that...his little friend picked it from dustbin.

I thought it was from the '50s, but a MyLotter told me they're actually making tables like that now. It could be just a few years old.

@vandana7 It was a team effort. I actually spied it first. But we asked his mom if it would be OK that we turn it into a project.

"What's an order of magnitude when it comes to friends?" lost there ...what does it mean? I am glad you enjoyed it. Kinda three different generations, eh? :) I have not done anything like that since hostel days!

@TheHorse .... Oh it requires planning - day scholars are requested to bring in some food items (gold spot bottles - like fanta). These are smuggled up into the room. Then the girls who have radios are invited. If not our usual group had Asmita Gandhi who had a tape recorder. then organize some batteries for that. And finally, smuggle some flat bread with curry up to the terrace have moonlight dinner while others are studying. I took caning for such things. lol But I think nuns were scared ...kinda others will copy ...and things will go out of hand. lol

@vandana7 Caning? They actually still cane there? Adults here would be arrested for such a thing, I'm sure! How old were you?

Tell us more about "hostel days"! Sounds interesting. An "order of magnitude" just means "x 10," or "times ten." My young friend is just over seven, and my older friend is just over 70.

That table is getting a lot of attention, although why it's apparently at the kerb (curb?) eludes me. I was never one for the Boys' Night Out - cars and sports I do not find interesting topics for discussion. Your night sounds like it was interesting though.

I don't know why it was tossed. The top was "trashed," and someone had written "dirty words" on it with a Sharpee, but those are long gone now.

@pgntwo Precisely. We started oiling it last night. I'll take an "after" picture of the top when we're done.

I have had a girls day out and gone to be primped and pampered. I've gone out with a group of girls for the weekend and we hiked, climbed trees, been filthy with mud and had a great time. Flexibility is the key. Stereotypes have all of us behaving in a certain way. Reality doesn't work that way. Glad to hear that you had an enjoyable time.

Climbing trees sounds like fun! Girls don't always do girlie things and guys don't only discuss manly things. Just now, I had a fella over (he brought some speakers to restore), and we were discussing "Danish Modern" versus other aesthetics, and where to get pretty fabric.

Truthfully, I never really did these. It was always an "anyone is welcome" thing, so wives and girlfriends came along. It was actually more fun that way.

Oh, I don't consciously do "guys' nights out." It just occurred to me as we were sitting on my balcony that we were "the boys," with a sixty-five year spread between the youngest and the oldest. I enjoyed that. And this kid doesn't have a dad in his life, so he learns how to be a "man" from me and other male role models.

@TheHorse - That's cool. I guess anything like a boys night out for me was going to a hockey game. No kid for me to mentor, however. I don't think I'd make a good role model, however.

I liked tom boys. Still do. I could never date someone who didn't like hiking and cycling and such. And the little girls I work with? I turn 'em into tom boys. For future Horses to go hiking and play catch with. Buwaahaahaa! I hope kids of the next generation (boys and girls) don't lose touch with nature.

We do a girl's night here just about every Saturday. My daughter and I watch this silly show called Svengoolie. He is a host to a grade B horror movie. It's fun and sort of silly. Boris Karloff was in the movie last week.

@TheHorse as a kid I almost always preferred hanging with the white headed people rather than my own age, much more interesting.

@Jessicalynnt I was close with my dad, especially when I was very young, and loved learning from. He got me started on hiking, etc. I also enjoyed learning from adult conversations that happened around me.

It was a great time, being with "boys" of various ages. My older friend has grandchildren, so he was good with my young friend as well.

My hubby and I are pretty much loners so no people's nights out. We went to town and got some errands done yesterday. How about that? I love your photo. Teaching the young. Good going.

That sounds like a really awesome time. I have never had any kind of girl's night out. Maybe someday I will. When I do, it's likely to be sushi with a couple of friends.

What I can imagine is three very happy 'men' heading off to their respective homes eventually. Way to go. :)

It was fun. Mom gave my younger friend an extra 15 minutes, and he and my adult friend left (home to his wife, who doesn't understand his love of stereo gear) at about the same time, leaving me with a smile.
