I'm excited about this.

So I got a text from my sister this morning asking me to call her as soon as I got up. I actually thought she was going to tell me someone had died. It is just unusual for her to text me with a request to speak to me. A lot of you know about our relationship and how I'd love to be closer to her. She's just not that kind of person to want the same.
Anyway, I called her and she had news I was so glad to hear. They were working on possibly adopting another child. Amyra, who is five now, was adopted out of foster care, and she was nine months when they first laid eyes on her (she was 3 months premature, so she was in and out of the hospital for her first year and a half). This little boy, who has just turned one, has medical problems like Amyra did. Amyra had to be fed through a hole in her stomach until she was around three. Among other things she had to be on oxygen for ages because of her premature lungs.
I saw a picture of the little boy, and he isn't black (he's white). I was disappointed at first because Amyra is black and I don't want her to feel different when she grows up. But, he is a boy after all, and maybe him being the opposite gender will keep any kind of comparisons smaller than I think. By comparisons I mean how other people will treat them, not family and friends.
So he has reddish brown hair, and has a tube in his throat, so that's one medical issue. He was less premature than Amyra, but unlike Amyra's biological mom, the little boy's mother was an alcoholic. So there are a few medical problems still to be worked on. But that isn't going to scare them away. I mean people shied away from Amyra, but at five years old she now has NO medical problems. They think the same can happen with the little boy.
So I'm excited to see where this goes, and I'm thrilled for my sister and brother-in-law. Some of you know the chaos of the process of being foster parents, then working towards an adoption. My sister was getting drained with all the work you have to do to be qualified again. This is great news for them.

And it's a shame. My sister told me about one little boy who was hard to place. He was a baby, but had six fingers on each hand, and six toes on each foot. And no one seemed to want him which is crazy! Extra digits can be removed, but even if they couldn't it seems like such a silly reason to not take a child. Thankfully, when my sister inquired about him it turned out a relative had expressed interest in adopting him, and eventually did.

That is wonderful news!
They must be a very devoted and unselfish couple to be able to take on a child with such health problems to begin with.
I wish them all of the luck in the world with everything going thru for this little boy to be granted to their family.
Amyra will be so happy to have a baby brother!

Congratulations to your sister and her family. One of my grandchildren is adopted. I know the strain and iWork involved with adopting a child.

That is great news for them. Just so sad that both of these babies have these issues.

Wow, that is such an inspiring story! Sounds like your sister and her husband are such big-hearted human beings! I hope they are successful in adopting the boy, and providing him the love and support he needs to be successful in life!

You have a wonderfully caring sister and brother in law. It's so hard caring for children with disabilities. You must be very proud of them. I wouldn't worry too much about their color. I have nieces and nephews of both colors and they get along fine.
