Older high-end phone, or newer model, but entry-level?

Stores may keep selling older models of phones long after they have been replaced by newer models - sometimes at heavily discounted prices. iPhone 5S, Samsung Note 4, HTC M8S were great phones about a couple of years ago and they still function excellently. They are cheaper now than phones launched to be entry or mid-level devices, as iPhone SE, Samsung A5 2016 or HTC A9. On one hand, buying a newer phone gives you access to the latest in software development, on the other, a more premium device, even formerly upper market, will give you a better build quality and access to some unique features, which usually aren't available on entry-level devices. So which one would you choose for below $400? The brand-new, but entry-level device, or the former king of the hill?

I made the mistake of buying a newer, more powerful phone that had only half the internal memory of my previous one. Half the internal memory means, after included apps and operating system are taken into consideration, about a fifth or less of the usable memory of the last phone - and you can't put everything on the memory card. Internal memory is more important than newness and power.

Guess you are right, especially since Android Lollipop no longer allows apps to write directly to the SD card. So the internal memory becomes far more valuable, as most apps will only be able to write there and not on the external storage (it isn't without a reason that the SD is labeled ExtSdCard on the phones).

@LuciCJ There are some apps I can currently move most of the usage to the SD card (I'm running 5.1.1) but there are some I can't transfer any of them off the phone. Especially the bundled apps. Every time an app updates it seems to end up back on my phone. I'm currently trundling around 500 MB of internal storage, constantly having to move and/or delete apps compared to over 29GB on the card. 8GB was a mistake.

I recently bought a phone, the most unexpensive they had with whatsapp. That was the only extra thing I needed. It´s a Samsung and I don´t know how to use most of the devises.
