Funnily enough I was just talking about this last night after work.
I work in a hotel and there are a mixture of people there from different religions and form different countries.
It all started on our shift when one of the chefs cooked pork in a massive combi oven and on another shelf there was some chicken.
The chicken was for a muslim person and the head chef went mad and the food services manager came in to explain to the junior chef.
The food services manager is a muslim and he said you can't cook pork in the same oven as a chicken for a muslim.
Anyway...there was A LOT of banter that continued into the office where we go to get signed out.
I'm the lowest person there so I leave last after the chefs...I'm still in my probationary period.
I got to the office and the food service manager was there explaining the burkha and his mate was taking the pi$$ about women having to wear bin bags etc.
Then they tried to get me involved and I said I don't discuss religion or politics at work...especially when I'm still on probation

@Happy2BeMe I wouldn't mind talking about it as they're an open minded bunch and the muslim people there give non muslims stick about their unsavoury ways and the non muslims always try to persuade the muslims to eat a bacon sandwich
But when you're new it's best to keep your mouth shut

i agree with @STOUTjodee ... nowadays there is no telling what can offend someone. Obviously we can always TRY to avoid controversial topics....but honestly, i don't think it is the topics that cause the problem....it's how people do not know how to discuss such topics productively.....people use the wrong kinda language, people get offended over an opinion, people fear the conversation itself....

I am with you on all of those things Kayla. Another thing I avoid talking about in the work place it talking about the boss or fellow employees. Some people try to get you involved in their conversations about work but I always either walk away or change the subject.
