I have a grandmother, now she is 81 years old. Do you know what actually can make old people happy? I really want to see her smile or laugh in her old age.

When my mom was living. She was that age and what made her smile was spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed the company and that fact that people were there spending time with her. She also liked to go for drives, no where in particular but just to get out and see things she hadn't seen in a while. My mom loved music too. She loved to sing. Singing made her happy. I don't think it takes a whole lot to make them smile and be happy. They just don't want to be left alone and forgotten like so many older people are. They want to spend time with those that they love, talking and recalling memories. My mom loved to talk about her past and tell us stories. It made her happy to share those stories with us.

When i'm reading your words, i don't know...i think i want to cry. . Your words are so touching. We're all so busy with our business, and we don't realize that she might feel lonely.

I think it's just the same happens to my grandma. But luckily i live not that far from her. All i can remember about her is that she used to take care of me, play with me when i was still a child. And now it's my turn to take care of her. Thank you for sharing your very valuable experience.

@Ayuriny I know my mom use to get lonely and she loved it so much when somebody would take the time out of their busy lives to spend it with her. She would be glowing.I use to love and go visit her and stay a few days because I lived a distance from her. She would be so happy to see me but it always broke my heart to leave her there all alone. I miss her so much.

You'd have to know what they were like when they were young. Mom was 93 in 2010 and I found found that if I sang a tune she liked she'd grin and join in, she could still hear fairly well back then ...... by the time she was 98 that all changed.

I am not sure if "proud" is the term I would use @Ayuriny she was no longer able to take care of herself nor could she hear or respond to anyone, she was more like a vegetable than a human.

Oh,.... I'm sorry.. Is it that bad? 98 years is too old, then. But anyway, that's natural. The same thing will also occur to my grandma in next five or more years later, and so will we in our old age.

The best way is show her that you care her and have importance of her to you in each and every decision.

I think the interaction with their children or family would make them happy. Sometimes because the busy lifestyles of their offsprings, they feel lonely or neglected. I think to visit them often and interact with them will make them very happy.. spend more time with your grandmother, chat with her, bring her out, buy her nice food.. she will be very happy with the simplest yet greatest joy from the kinship.

Old people want love and importance , as we grow older we feel like left out because everybody is so busy these days nobody care about retired or senior people and leave them alone at home all day and go to work . to make your grandma happy sit with her talk to her , tell her how important she is to you , ask her about her like and dislikes , ask her about her stories from the youth and most importantly love her :)

Ask her about her youth. We all want to talk about "the good old days" and how things were. And just play games with her, spend time with her. People don't stop being good company just because they're older. And maybe there are things she can teach you.
