Yes, papaya has as much or more fibre than an apple; kiwi fruit, bananas and plantain are all an excellent source of potassium, guava and watermelon have more lycopene than an apple, star fruit and all of the citrus fruits are better than an apple for vitamin C.
There is nothing very special about apples. They are just one of most common fruit in countries where the saying "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" originated.
