Where I live the colleges offer night classes or classes online for people who have other obligations and have a hard time attending class during the day.

I think attendance is important, but here if you keep your grades up you don't have to attend. If you are a freshman attendance is compulsory only because you are new and need the interaction. Once you move up a grade the attendance is not as important, it depends on the professor.

I don't believe college courses should require students to be present in class: those that actually want their degrees will attend the class anyway, and those that don't shouldn't be wasting the time of the instructor and the other students. I believe that as long as the student can show a significant knowledge of the subject, they should be allowed to pass the class, regardless of their attendance.
On the other hand, I have no problem with instructors requiring a certain percentage of the student's grade to be derived from class participation: I hate lecture classes where only the instructor speaks. Classes in which the students are encouraged to bounce ideas around and think for themselves are much more productive and enjoyable, I believe.
