Why Do They Stare At Me?

My photo of the neighbour's cows

I am scared of cows. I know it is silly because I see people yell at them and the cows just get out of the way. If I have to go through a pasture to pick berries or something, someone has to come with me to yell at the cows. Sometimes that someone is an 8 year old child! I am not afraid to ride my bike or to walk past them. But when they all come to the fence and stare at me, I get a little uneasy! Do these cows look menacing to you?

No. They are just curious and want to know what's up with you? Mostly just be afraid of a cow if its a heifer- a Mom cow who has a calf. That Mom cow might get fiesty cause she wants her baby to be okay. And bulls. Don't mess with bulls. Otherwise, cows are pretty docile. And curious.

I guess I make them curious. No other country people go for a bike ride down the gravel road. This is truck country. lol

Yes...i have issues with cows as well...i have tried feeding them...there is no reason to be scared of them...but they have huge mouths...i think they might bite me...my mom always laughs at this fear of mine. Because here ....they don't hurt people for no reason.

Why should cows bite you? They're vegetarians! :-)

As a farm girl, I'm not intimidated by cows. Now ducks make me nervous. They bite. It hurts.

We didn't have ducks and geese on the farm as Mum said they messed up the dam too much and we got our house water from the dam. She said geese would grab of piece of skin, say on your arm, then twist the skin and it would really hurt.

When Vince was in Nepal cows were sacred and walked wherever they wanted. It was a mandatory six years jail if you killed one, even by accident.

It is rare to see a cow outside of their pasture. Not sleeping on the highway! That would be a sight!

It's not a good idea to pass through a pasture of cows which don't know you. It has happened that cows, which seemed harmless, attacked people. If there's a fence between you and the cows, it's ok. Let them stare. After all, standing on a pasture the whole day can become boring. The cows are glad for the diversion.

Cows can get pretty aggressive if they don't know you, so it is good to keep your distance haha I love cows though, ones that are used to humans being around all the time are great to see.

I was a little wary of cows when I was a kid walking through west Texas pastures, always worried that there might be a bull among the grazing cattle. But cows coming to the fence never bothered me. I am more wary of strange dogs somehow.

I don't think they are particularly menacing but I would rather not cross a field of cattle - especially not on my own. And if there's a bull in a field that's a definite no-no.

The bull is usually all alone in another pasture, except during breeding time.
