Life of Pi -Why did the tiger just leave?

This is a question from a discussion that we had in film studies class. In the movie Life of Pi, one of the major questions left to viewer's perception is why the tiger left Pi so unceremoniously. There was undoubtedly a strong bonding between Richard Parker and Pi, and the animal didn't care to acknowledge that before it left Pi. Each one has his own perception, and google gives in more. I'd like to know if anyone here has anything new to offer!

Yes. I know. It was to show that nothing stays with you. Everyone has their own journey..and they have to walk it alone. I think it was all about survival...the tiger is an animal and behaves like one...you can't expect human emotions from a tiger ....can you?

Well that's true. But here's another interesting perception - The tiger didn't exist at all. It was just a personified form of Pi'd fears and anxieties, which kept him alive throughout. It left him as soon as he reached the shore. It was all in Pi's head... and the true story is the one that he tells the Japanese officials at the end. What do you think?

It is interesting for sure...i haven't heard this perspective before. But doesn't he mention to the person to whom he is telling the story that he made that one up for the Japanese officials because they didn't ...or wouldn't believe the Richard Parker version.?

@ms1864 Yes... but that was actually the truth because Pi lived the imagination of having survived with Richard Parker; he didn't know it was only in his head!
