Can we become perfect? Just ponder a little bit about the word "perfect."
Perfect means perfect, right? Nothing more and nothing less, we could say as humans. We would think that Jesus also reasons like that when he gave us this great commandment:-
Mat 5:48 You must be perfect---
I have the impression he was thinking a bit after saying that.....and then he added the following magnificent words:-
just as your Father in heaven is perfect. Just as if he wanted us to realize how perfect we are to become. Not just perfect, but as perfect as our Father in heaven.
Will a merciful and compassionate God give us such a high calling and then leave us without the means to obtain it?

The word perfect is from the Greek teleiov meaning from 5056; complete (in various applications of labor, growth, mental and moral character, etc.); neuter (as noun, with 3588) completeness:--of full age, man, perfect.
Therefore we can become perfect by being complete in him. Citing from Strong's Greek Dictionary.

Our best efforts is as worthless rags in God's eyes. He wants to do the work in us himself. Then we can be sure it will be perfect.
Php 1:6 And so I am sure that God, who began this good work in you, will carry it on until it is finished on the Day of Christ Jesus.
He began a good work. HE will also finish it.
