What Should I Have With my Corned Beef Hash?

I'm going to fix corned beef hash tonight, I don't know if people eat this all over the world. But it's a favorite of my mom's and mine. Just your basic can of corned beef, boil potatoes, cut 'em up and throw 'em in. And chopped onions. Brown it til crispy. Always topped up by ketchup at our house. I'm hungry for it already! So I've got corn on the cob, peas & carrots, broccoli, spinach. Some salad fixings. What should I have with the corned beef hash? What do you like to serve on the side with it? Let's hash this out. Har-har!

I can't even remember the last time I had corned beef hash. My mom use to make it when I lived home many, many years ago. I can't remember what we had on the side. There was probably homemade pickles because mom always had her own pickles on hand.

I never would have thought of pickles! I just had to reboot. I thought I lost this discussion, but looks like it went through after all.

@CinnamonGrl Henderson's Relish would go well with it. Can you get it in California? It is traditionally made in Sheffield and is similar to Worcester Sauce. It's very nice on all kind of meat dishes.

I agree with the homemade pickles.

We cut up a cabbage and fry or rather saute it to have with corned beef hash. I like to make cornbread with it too. If I have time and planned ahead, I will put a pot of pinto beans or black-eyed peas with it.

@rebelann I want a pot of field peas and snaps! Along with some squash and onions, fried okra, fresh cukes, and tomatoes cut up.... just like at mama's house during the crop producing months. YUMMY!

That sounds really good especially as a summer meal @Shellyann36 I'd have to make some fish or meat to go with it though.

It is illegal to have corned beef hash without fried eggs and toast. Breakfast for dinner works for me.

I've only ever heard of it with eggs.

I've never put eggs on the kind we make. I've put them on the kind that has the potatoes in the can because that kind "needs" something lol

I've done that with the canned kind. I was thinking of running that by my mom actually, if she might want eggs on it.

@CinnamonGrl - I've only had the canned kind. I should try making it like you. That sounds good.

Sounds delicious. We don't eat much corned beef these days. My mum used to buy it a lot when we were kids and make corned beef pie, corned beef hash, etc. I think I was always put off by those lethal cans that it used to come in, where you could easily cut your hand off, but maybe things have improved packaging-wise

They haven't LOL. I was just talking with another friend about that. I hate these dang cans. I always break off the key or something, and end up having to pry the can lid open. Haven't cut myself in ages, but I have done it. Argh. Kinda why I don't make this dish too often.

@CinnamonGrl Maybe that's why people aren't eating corned beef as much. I guess the salt content is probably not that healthy either but it is so, so tasty.

@charlie09 I chose it because the astrological 5th house is associated with creativity and hopefully I'll live up to the name and produce some creative posts! And also because the house I'm currently living in is my 5th house.

I thought cans of corned beef hash already had tiny potatoes in it?

I eat them with soft fried eggs so the yolk drips into the hash.

Corned beef hash is one of my all time favorites but I haven't had it in quite awhile. You do bring back some good memories of when my mother in law would make her own corned beef hash and I'd always make sure I invited myself over for dinner

We rarely have hash but I do love it, corn on the cob or spinach would be my choice.

My cousin cooked corned beef with potatoes and it was something like corned beef hash. I did not even know that it was corned beef hash and it was yummy.

It sounds like you already have a meal. Maybe some light fruit for dessert? That would cut through the fat in the corned beef.
