Tomorrow: My first day at the shoe store

Eugene, Oregon
September 27, 2016 12:33pm CST
As I mentioned before, I sold women's shoes at the old Leeds shoes for women. They had hundreds of stores across the nation and I worked in several southern California stores including Hollywood (on Hollywood Blvd). When I was in college here in Eugene, I worked part-time for Burches' Shoes. Now, six years after my retirement from a completely different field, I will work at Burchs again, only a day or two a week, probably. It is a high end store and well thought of in town, so it will be interesting. I am not one to be idle and play ping pong, fo yoga, shoot pool and write a lot, but that "mad money" is attractive as well.

Yes, it is a little strange. Maybe I'll get back into groceries next (my first job at 14).

Whoa, I never figured you for a shoe salesman James. Are you still at the Backyard Bird Store as well?

I was only scheduled for Sundays (five hours) this month, will work a day or two a week to learn the shoe store, then decide if I want either of them I guess.

@JamesHxstatic - congratulations on your new job. I agree that it can be handy to have a little "mad money" in retirement.

Good luck. Did you keep your job at the bird seed store in case this one doesn't work out?

It was a long day trying to figure out where all the different types of shoes are in the store. A woman there sold four pair for over $500.

I am still there but only scheduled for Sundays this month. I wrote about someone wanting to hire me when I went into the shoe store with Anne last week.

Most we know who are consider 'retired' work, with some still being at 40 hours each week. Gotta' do what makes you happy.

My husband is retired and works in his old field doing what he loves to do on the weekends from May to November. He loves it and I love that he loves it and I'm on vacation almost every weekend all summer and fall...but I camp and he is not a camper, and I travel with my sister while he works. We spend the winter together usually somewhere warm and sandy. He would be miserable if he didn't have something he loves to do... High end sounds good to me, I think you will enjoy your new retirement job.

Congratulations on a new venture into an old job. You never read much about shoe salesmen, but this post gave me a bit of a smile, it put me in mind of Al Bundy from back in the 90s. :) I read you also have been working in a bird feed store as well one day a week. I hope the new job works out for you and you like it. Let us know if the shoe fits ;)
