What's Your Name

How many of you like your name? I didn't like mine one bit growing up. Ruby sounded so plain when the other girls had such pretty names. Emily, Sheila, Priscilla, Teresa, Amelia, Lola. Maxine, Barbara and Christine. But as I got older I learned to love my name. I thought about the beautiful red jewel I was named after and I decided my name was perfect. How do you feel about your name, Do you love it, hate it, or decided to love it anyway.

My name is Laurel. When I was younger I didn't like it because it was different. I wanted a name like everybody else Shelley, Susan, Heather, etc. As I got older I learned to like my name. It was a name that my mom and dad choose just for me and my others sisters all had popular names. I always get lots of compliments on my name.

i thought you didn't like it because it was masculine. laurel is how we call bay leaf here and use it in dishes along with whole peppercorns (pamintang buo). there are also families here whose surname is laurel.

I love your name, it's beautiful. I didn't like my name when I was younger because it was so popular. There were 3-5 Jennifer's in each of my classes which got annoying. Now I do like my name. =)

When my grandson Josh was young, we had three co-workers with boys named Josh. To keep up with who we were talking about, I called mine Joshua which is his name.

@LovingMyBabies I think Jennifer is a very pretty name. I know several people named Jennifer, when I was named there were lot's of Rubys at my school. It seemed such a common name. That's why I didn't like it.

I felt the same about mine growing up. Very old fashioned name and so I shortened it. My mother and grandmother were both named after that red jewel. Lovely.

I felt the same when I was growing up and I hated my name coz when I did something wrong as a kid, my parents would call me by my name. But when I haven't done anything bad, they'd call me by my nickname which was Baby Girl.

My family all have bug nicknames. Red bug, Lady bug, Cuddle bug, Doodle bug, Tater bug, Love bug, Bed bug (no, not really!), and we need to come up with a bug name for our newest grandbaby, maybe Baby bug.

I've always liked my name. The only trouble was that if someone didn't see me attached to it, I was always assumed to be a girl. When I was getting my masters degree online I even specified in my bio that I was indeed male, but some of the professors would refer to me as a female. So I just let it go. I got better grades for some reason... :P

@RubyHawk I had a male professor in college who was named Kimberly. To me, that name is always a girls, it doesn't sound masculine at all. My name was originally male but is used by both now. It doesn't bother me one way or another.

I gave my middle son a name that was a boys name at the time. We knew one other boy with the name. He was a football star at the high school. But by the time my son started to school girls were in his class with the same name. He hated it and never used the name.He used his other name. I told him we would have it changed but he didn't want to.

I think Ruby is a pretty name, and there are three songs that I love with "Ruby" in the title ("Ruby" by the Dave Rawlings Machine, "Ruby's Song" by the Louvin Brothers, and "Ruby Ann" by Marty Robbins). I have no problems with my name.

That's the only thing to do if you really hate your name. Some names do sound terrible. Like some movie stars who have named their children with such awful names.

I never minded my name growing up. It may be because I knew my mom thought about each person's name a lot. I don't remember if baby books with names were done back then, but to my knowledge, each sibling liked their names too and some were a bit different than most. There's a customer named ruby, that has reddish hair. I don't remember how I came to know her name, but I remember it each time I see her and she is always surprised that I know her name.

I think most parents give a lot of thought to the name they give their children, but sometimes names that are popular at the time fall out of favor. There was a time when kids were named such trendy names that I liked the old standard names better. I also know a Ruby with red hair.

My name is Cynthia. No matter how many times I told people that, they would always revert to calling me Cindy. Most of the time followed by "Lou" which is not my middle name. So, I decided if they were going to call me Cindy, they would still have it wrong, because I spell it different than what they say, lol. Cindi.
