What email program to use?

I've been using Windows Live Mail for as long as I remember, but now Microsoft is discontinuing the program and it's already giving me all kinds of problems. It all started a couple of weeks ago when I started getting messages that it wasn't able to synchronise my calendar and that I should look for an update. Trouble is there are no more updates. It was only a Google search for that update that lead me to discover the program was being discontinued in the first place. Next it started giving an error message on my Mom's email address, saying I'd entered the wrong password, which is not the case. Nothing I've tried can fix that. So I started looking around for a new program to use. Trouble is none of them wants to work with my Windows Live Calendar, not even Outlook 2010, which I have on my computer but have never used. I've tried exporting my calendar so that I can import it into a Google calendar but the methods I've found online don't work. I've wasted the best part of two days installing new calendars in the hope that something will fill my requirements, including the ability to automatically sort emails into folders, but nothing seems to work. I'm at my wits' end. Any suggestions? Edit: All responses I've received so far seem to refer to email services. I'm not looking to change that, only the software I use to read and sort my email.
