He Was Thrown Out!

Although this photo was taken in the room she shared with her brother when our granddaughter was in kindergarten, happy for it to be cool enough to wear her new outfit to school, she is now in third grade. She wants a room of her own and her privacy. Fortunately, my son and his wife knew this day would arrive. When they had their new co-op in Manhattan gutted and redesigned, they included another bedroom for whichever child wanted it. Up until now, it served as a playroom. Now our grandson has that room, fully redecorated with new furniture and a desk. He kept his toys and personal belongings Our granddaughter wanted to remain in her room and keep the bottom bunk for her friends during sleepovers. She also has a new desk and a bulletin board upon which all her figure skating and synchronized skating medals are displayed. All her toys and belongings are in her room now. I always had my own room growing up. So did my sons. You?

I shared with both of my sisters until the age of 11 when we moved to a bigger house. My own children always had their own rooms.

@DianneN No, it was only three bedrooms. My two older sisters shared and I got a very small room to myself - yippee!

That's what happens with kids. I know that very well. Even though my kids live with the ex out of state. When they come here they need their own space. Right now my daughter has her own room, being a girl she wants her privacy. My son takes over my living room. But I am looking for a way to make another room for him. Hopefully I can accomplish this. I am sure she is real excited about her new room.

@DianneN I thought of that. But I don't have a studio. But the rooms are like track rooms. All in a row. I could get doors for the archway I have and make the middle room a room for my son. It would actually be a dual room. A sitting room the he is not here and his room when he is.

I understand. Perhaps you can do what my son did when he had a studio apartment. He divided his living room from his bedroom with a wall unit. Both kids are thrilled with their new rooms, thank goodness!

I was alone at first and then my brother closest to me moved in when our other brother was born and then when the youngest was old enough to leave my parents room, those two boys shared a room across the hall from my room and our older brother had his own room. I missed my brother when he moved out!! We used to laugh a lot. With my kids it was the same, my daughter had a room and my sons shared a room.

When you're young, it's fun to share a room. When my parents went out and had a sitter for us, my brothers and I always slept in the same bed. What fun we had!

I shared the bedroom with my brother until I was 7. Then we moved to a bigger apartment and I had my own bedroom.

Your daughter is fortunate to have her own room and enjoy privacy. I did not have my own room when I was young because we are too many in the family.

So many people had to share rooms with siblings. One house not too far from me has 8 bedrooms! Can you imagine?

I shared a room with my sister most of the time. I wasn´t happy about it as she was much smaller than I was.

Yes, I agree, a child needs their own space. I always had my own bedroom growing up, but I didn't have any sisters to share it with and my brothers shared a bedroom when they were younger, but eventually needed their own as well.

No sister for me, either. My brothers each had their own room when my dad built the new house. I was 5 at the time we moved in, and my brothers a bit younger.

Yes, they are happy now! I think it's healthier for kids to have their own rooms when possible.

@DianneN Dianne, I cannot recall if I had my own room when I was growing up and lived at home. I had my own room when I started living in apartments. Now, I share my room with my Sophie.

I shared for a very long time, although we had enough space,it felt loneyl to be all alone in one room at night so we chose to share. I still share on the rare occasions that l visit, there are 3 empty bedrooms but always want to re-live my growing up so l always ask a niece if we can share and she`s always happy to.

Lucky you. My sister rightly had a room all for herself but my brother and I had to share. Nice picture. I think she is right to want her own room and privacy. Your son and his wife should be congratulated on forward planning. Some parents wouldn't recognise the privacy needs of an eight year old girl.

It seems that many siblings have to share a room. Before my son bought this co-op, he had bought a two bedroom. The day they moved in, my daughter in law gave birth. 22 months later she gave birth again! Those two babies shared an 8x10 room, so they knew then and there they would have to move to a larger place. I told them they were nuts for buying such a small place in the first place. Kids!
