Have you ever driven a car with no fuel before?

I was interested to find out how much reserve a car has for fuel usually and how far we could potentially go on a car journey if our fuel or petrol tank ran out? I heard that even when the light indicator in a car shows empty there is still enough fuel in the car for a 30mile drive. Have you ever experienced this before?

I did nearly 100 miles once in my car when the fuel light was flashing. Computer said 0 miles a couple of weeks ago and I kept driving it then it ran out of diesel in my work car park The actual reserve depends on the car and if you've got a petrol car you could test the reserve as long as you've a spare fuel can...I've done it a lot but it's not such a good idea with a diesel.

Ugh, I got to the part where you mentioned diesel and yelled "Don't do it!" about running out. It sucks because you have to take so much time to bleed the lines again. I did it once with a tractor and never again.

@OneOfMany I didn't have to do that with my car as I think it does it itself but it did take a while to start after I ran out of fuel and added new fuel. From my experience it's certainly harder to restart a diesel than a petrol engine.

@Mike197602 That's fortunate. The tractor certainly didn't have that feature. A normal combustion engine is much easier to work with. As long as it can ignite the fuel it's good to go. Diesel requires a little finesse since it doesn't exactly ignite without temperature and pressure being just right.

It depends on the car. I have an older car and I can go 100km after.

That is pretty good. I never actually knew that until recently. Prob not a good thing to do it though as it could damage the car apparently.

It's true. It all depends on the car.

@gudheart I don't think so. Anyway, the reserve was not made for long distances, it was made so we could quickly refill instead of been stocked.

I have no idea but I hope it is enough to get you to the nearest gas station and hope you don't run out of gas in a very remote place. I never want our car to show the light indicator, so I always nag my husband to gas up before it shows.

I am also quite careful to ensure it does not reach the empty indicator. However I was really close last month!

I haven't tried it with my car, though I imagine it would get an interesting result being a hybrid. Although the battery is 5 years old, so I'd rather try it with a new one.

Not car, but scooty. And I didn't know without or with very less amount of fuel a scooty could work, it was my friend who did this, turn the key off, and drive a while, then again drive with starting the scooty! :) :p

No way. Running out of gas isn't on my bucket list! I fill up when it gets to a quarter of a tank.

I am usually like that too. I was close to running out last month though.
