Born in 1930 he was a musician, priest, author and occultist. He founded the Church of Satan and the religion of Laveyan Satanism. He was brought up in the San Francisco area though he was born in Chicago. He acted, narrated, hosted and advised on a couple of satanic movies. He was described as a showman and appeared on talk shows and in the news media from the 60's until he died. He is said to have worked for the San Francisco Police Department as a photographer. Also for the carnival as a cage boy and musician. These things were later unsubstantiated on a fact sheet his children constructed after his death. He did covers for instrumentals like Harlem Nocturne by Earle Hagen. He worked as a organ player in burlesque houses. He also was to have had a short affair with Marilyn Monroe. This when she was an unknown and working as a dancer at the Mayan Theater. The Church of Satan was established in 1966 and is still the most logical and consistent written communication on the subject of satanism. He wrote six books on the subject. The Satanic Bible is the best known. He died at age 67 on October, 29, 1997 of pulmonary adema.

He was a fascinating figure and really just an atheistic showman. He appeared in the dream sequence playing Satan in the film Rosemary's Baby which he worked on

I recall seeing him in several things back in the 90's. He was the first to really write it all down I think. Aleister Crowley wrote on some ideas but not like LaVey did in his Satanic Bible and such. Yes, he was quite the showman.

It seems that most who "sell their souls" to Satan die much younger. I am surprised he lived so long.
