Bellydance, an admirable art form

I've been practicing belly dance as an art form and fun way to exercise for 17 years now. Half my life. (I'm 34). I became interested in the art form when I was 17. I saw a dancer on a music video and soon decided to learn at home through, at that time, VHS tapes. I didn't practice all the day, but I did try to make dance part of my daily routine. I day dreamed about taking classes - but all classes offered were not only expensive, they were also hours away, as I lived in rural area. We moved and the art form became more popular - and I was able to take a class. That class turned into a troupe - the first troupe I was in. We did some nice routines but the people weren't genuinely friendly. Thisd to seveal arguments and I ended up leaving. So the next year or so were rather quiet for me, until I found this next batch of classes that I wanted to take with a different instructor. I took classes with her about a year and then she moved. By that time a lot of students became friends. We made our own troupe about 6 years ago. I do plan to write some more observations from my experience in dance soon, but thought I would start with this, my own little journey thus far. Photo: Mine (selfie!)

I've been belly dancing for 10 years, and I have to admit, it is the best thing that ever happened to my self esteem, my body, and my mental health.

My wife lived in Turkey back in the late 1960s and '70s. There, she taught dependent Air Force kids. One of the teachers was a belly dancer and most of the other female teachers joined her in forming a troupe. They put on a show at the Officers' Club. Anne made her own elaborate costume and helped the others with theirs.

Oh that's amazing, I can't imagine what Turkey would be like-- it's great how the dance hobby can lead to the sewing hobby. Very cool! Thanks for sharing

Awesome! What kind of places -- around here it's wineries, art fairs, Renassiance Fests, and a few restaurants - but we're trying to expand our horizons ...
