What things make you feel lonely?

I noticed the other day the our preschool sunflower, once a recipient of attention from all, and a source of pride from the kids, was starting to fade, as all sunflowers must in the Fall. Almost like a pouting child, it has turned away from the play area, hanging its head to the North. I took this photograph from the parking lot today, and it made me feel lonely. I feel lonely when I hear kids say No! when another asks, Can I play with you? I feel lonely when I think of friends and relatives who are no longer around. I feel lonely when I'm in a crowd but can't relate to what has brought people there (alcohol, NASCAR, metal music, etc.). interestingly, I DON'T feel lonely when I'm alone at home, working on speakers, grading papers, or practicing my guitar or mandolin. What makes you feel lonely?

I know the feeling...people can make us feel more lonely than actually being alone. Solitude does feel better sometimes.

I want to forget the recent episode...kinda of imagining folks yapping in their language in my home, and me feeling isolated, they not listening to what I want or need. Gave me creeps. In many ways, I don't identify with my folks...having been in hostels earlier on so ..acting socially is fine...but in the heart, acceptance is not there. Pretty much feeling that i am their guest or they are mine...nothing to say we are family.

I tend to enjoy my solitude. Right now I wish I had more of it!

@vandana7 The language they speak in....you don't know it? It is probably your mother-tongue right? I am "supposed to know" Sindhi too...but i don't know head or tale of that language...i actually don't even like the way it sounds.

Oh my goodness, this is a beautiful photo and has so much meaning behind it. It is almost like seeing a lost baby shoe and there is no sign of the other mate for it. I have been feeling rather lonely at the moment because the guy I was head over heels for simpely forgot about me. Things that make me lonely is memories. I love my memories and I am so happy I went through everything I have had. Just sometimes I remember that those people have changed or are long gone. But we get through it and find a way to cope and feel the warmth of embrace whether physically or mentally. That is why I listen to music, I don't feel so alone as soon as I turn on music.

@TheHorse I have to be strong all the time for the sake of my daughters. But so many days I remember of days gone by, when my husband and my grandson were alive. It was as if it were another world.

Actually people make me feel lonely, but also not so much if they are are at a distance. Does that make sense?

People who are close to you? Emotionally? Or physically?

@TheHorse Good question. Women obviously not so much, but in general I prefer people to be at a distance. Does that make sense? lol

@crossbones27 I prefer people I can't relate to to be at a mutually respectful distance. I do try to be friendly overall.

I like being alone too. But I wouldn't want to be all the time.

Pony, I feel lonely when I go out with some of my former neighbors...I feel dad is not around...dad is almost like my child. But if I had to say loneliness, I went to one place to buy a home...I was engulfed with immense loneliness..everything about that place was good, yet...the gut feeling was not. I want to go there once more to confirm whether it is place related or my mood related.

I feel lonely when I'm somewhere that nobody goes out of their way to acknowledge me, or says anything to me.

Until I moved I wasn't lonely. My son lived with me and though he was in his world and me in mine - he's a gamer and spent the majority of his time in his room, and me well I write so I'm in my office all the time, but with the move and my son now having a car, I feel suddenly alone more than any other time in my life. Hence my post at the time - I Have No Purpose - Now I have a purpose again, or at least I'm getting one so I don't feel as alone as I did when I first moved here. However, there are still those lonely times I wish I could spend with someone else. I'm getting my chance for that this weekend.

Like you I don't feel lonely on my own. I guess mostly it would be when I'm in a roomful of people but don't relate to any of them very much.

I sometimes feel a bit anxious when I have nothing to work on. Maybe that's a part of why I like projects so much.

Glad I captured the feeling. I think. My gardens make me feel so alive. I can't say I hate it, as it's a part of life, but it saddens me a bit when the corn plants turn brown, the sunflowers hang their heads, and another "harvest" has passed.

Right now? Everything. Being alone in bed. Waking up alone. Sitting on the couch with a friend in the room, with the person who'd always been next to me...not there. The pain, broken heart, and betrayal aside, I am struggling with the lack of being part of something. I miss the kind touches, the hugs, the person to lean on.

Like you, being in a crowd....that I have little in common with. I generally don't feel lonely, even when I am alone, doing the things I love.....sewing, baking, reading....

@TheHorse The Horse that is an interesting question. I guess I will say what makes me lonely is when I have so many problems with the noise here and people talking behind my back here acting like they are in kindergarten and then my cat not behaving. I just cannot take it with all that going on at once. It makes me very sad that when my cat does that I cannot even count on her to help me through the day.
