Had A Health Scare This Past Summer And Finding Out Neighbors Aren't So "Neighborly"

On Saturday, July 23rd I was in for a surprise to say the least. I went out to do my usual errands, things I've done a gazillion times before without a thought. But next thing you know, I was waking up in the hospital. I had an episode of heat stroke. It's been a long road to recovery, since the effects can take minimum two months to get out of one's system but even up to a year.
But here's the negative thing I discovered. Neighbors. In the following weeks after my heat stroke, I just plain didn't trust going out again, since it was still VERY hot and didn't want to risk another "episode". Well I did ask one neighbor if she could do some grocery shopping for me…no problem…she did. Thing is I was hesitant to be a "pain" about it and keep asking as she does work LONG hours.
So I began asking another neighbor, a neighbor who has lived next to me for 40 some odd years if she could do the shopping for me….She agreed. But then she "changed". No doubt, she was talking to her friends about doing the shopping for me and one had suggested that she should charge me to do so. So sure enough the last time she did grocery shopping for me she says she would charge me $20.00 to do so. SAY WHAT??
She seems to have forgotten the numerous "favors" I did for her in the past, including helping her clean her place as it looks like a hurricane, tsunami, and tornado went through it. She is classic "hoarder" type. Also, used to give her BIG platefuls of holiday dinners in the past for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. I never asked her for a monetary reward.
I'm still not feeling too keen, but have been managing to do errands again myself, but you better believe I'm NOT going to ask that neighbor for any help again.
What's your take on a person, a neighbor you've known a LONG time "demanding" money for a favor? Take about "chutzpah."

I wish I could order on-line but can't. I do get food stamps, so that's how I can get groceries. I DID give that neighbor my food stamp card and she was able to use it for me.

This won't help with the neighbor problem (which is just awful and unmannerly of them, in my opinion), but have you checked to see if your grocery store will deliver? I know Safeway around here delivers, and they often have a free delivery code for new customers. A shopping service like Curbside or Instacart might be able to help too, and they also have discounts for new customers.

Unfortunately no. The markets near me don't delver, that's the main problem

What a pain - not really the word I wanted to use, but... I wouldn't ask any of my neighbors, except the family across the street from me, for anything. However, I do have some friends who aren't neighbors I would ask things of. For example, when I had a car wreck back in the '00's, I knew my mother couldn't come help me. However, my brother was living in town by that time, and he came and got me from the hospital. I allowed myself to be transported because I wasn't sure if I had done further injury to my neck or not. I think they took an x-ray, but I can't remember now.

Maybe it's time to finally ignore this neighbor, so selfish indeed.

How un-neighborly that is. Wow! I can't imagine doing that to my neighbor.
