Do you obey signs if you see them? For instances one that says "Silence your Phone"

The other day when I went to the dental office - there was a little sign on the coffee table that says, please silence your phone. However, if you had not seen the sign - you wouldn't know to silence your phone. Since I saw the sign, I put my phone on vibrate. In order to silence my phone, I would have to go into settings and I didn't want to do that knowing no one is going to call me. Do you immediately change your phone settings if you saw signs like that? Or ignore? There were some people who ignored the sign because their phones were making all sorts of noises. - It doesn't bug me one or the other, but it would depend on the location/setting. This was a doctors office. If you ignored the sign during a funeral, wedding, an important ceremony, I would be upset -

I do try to notice and respect signs . . . but regardless of signs, I do tend to put my phone into vibrate mode in those kinds of situations anyway. To me it's more of a common sense thing - out of courtesy or that sometimes the signals disrupt the equipment or whatever.

@infatuatedbby When we went to see a musical at a college theater over the summer, we were instructed before the show started to please shut the phones off completely - not even in vibrate mode. Apparently during the opening show the night before, they had sound problems as it was a wireless system . . . so with all the wireless things going on in the audience, it must've disrupted their sound!

@much2say Ohh no wonder! They should said please turn off because if you don't - it'll interfere with the wireless system

Yes - do respect the signs too. My phone is never on silence, but would be turned off. Other than that ringer or vibrate.

I will obey the sign for sure. I don't have any problems to set my phone as the silent mode. I don't want to bother others because of my phone ring. In fact sometimes when I go to some special places like library and so on, I will turn my phone as the silent mode even if I don't see the signs.

I may be a troublemaker but I obey signs. The place where people are whispering and silent lol and hospitals, clinics, meetings, even at grocery stores etc. I keep my phone silent without having to read or see the signs. Some places you just know that no disturbance is needed.

Yes you're right. It's common sense for some areas where we should silence our phones. Very nice of you to turn off at the market too. I don't at the market or mall.

I know the signs are there for a reason...so i listen to them if i see one. It is these little things that build up a good and considerate society. We gotta think of people besides ourselves right?

Yes! I follow the rules too. If I had not seen the sign, it'd be a different story, but since I did - I will obey.

@seerat_11 Me too. It is common curiosity / respond. I would be angered if those did not silence/vibrate or turn off their phones in those situations. But at a dentist office it wouldn't bug me.

I would just leave my phone at home or in my car so I will not hear the cell phone at all.

If you leave in your car - don't leave it in a visible spot :)

The main reason they ask to turn off the phones is because it can affect some of the equipment in the doctors office @infatuatedbby . People don't realize that radio waves are emitted from the phones.

As to whether I obey a sign or not, it depends what it is. Re: switching my phone off in a doctor's surgery, I probably would just in case it did ring. Somebody once told me that in hospitals, clinics and some doctors' surgeries, the energies which come from a mobile phone when it's switched on, even if it doesn't ring, can interfere with their medical equipment. How much truth there is in that though, I don't really know.

I heard it can interfere with some medical supplies so it's best obey the rules.

If I'm doing business, like in an appointment or in courthouse, whether there's a sign or not, I turn my phone off. I think it's just courteous to have your phone off or on silence when doing business.

Yes you're right! I do the same. When I went to the courthouse, I turned my phone completely off just encase. They didn't allow us to silence because they may be afraid some might record?

Most places like dentist or doctor offices will ask that you turn off cell phones but I see many people who just ignore it. I tend to follow rules so I silence my phone so it isn't disturbing anyone else

I see a lot of people ignore it. It wouldn't bug me too much but for me, since I saw the sign - I feel I am obligated to as well and as a common curiosity to follow rules.

Sometimes I remember, but typically my phone doesn't ring. The only one that does is my landline and those are annoying telemarketers. In other words, I don't have too many friends that call.

Nobody rings or texts me often so I'd probably ignore those types of signs If I was in a certain situation I'd turn my phone off altogether.

No one really calls me too! But since I saw the sign, I thought I'd change my phone but vibrate not silence because that would require me to do more work and I'd forget to fix it later.
