Playful Squirrels

I took this photograph on a weekend break in Norfolk. We had just been to a tea shop and were passing a rather picturesque churchyard when we noticed several squirrels running up and down the gravestones. They seemed to be having lots of fun and what might be considered quite a sombre place to humans was clearly an excellent adventure playground for them. It felt a little incongruous to witness so much activity in such a quiet, still place, but it was quite pleasing too, a sign that life goes on. I quite enjoy wandering around a graveyard. I know a lot of people find them rather creepy places, but to me there's usually just a feeling of calm. I enjoy reading the headstones too and often think about the stories behind the people who are laid to rest there.

This is a beautiful photo, I am sure that the squirrel appreciates this quiet place, it's so cute.

I love to see squirrels. What surprised me is just how many of them were playing together in this place.

@5thHouse May be that in the cemetery people let them alone and they feel safe.

To a squirrel, the graveyard is just a nice place to live.

This is a nice photoshoot. Squirrels are adorable creatures but I hardly see them. I can only see them in the zoo here. You are very lucky that you can get so close to them.

Those damn British squirrels look just like our American ones! lol They sure are busy little critters, aren't they? I love graveyards, for exactly the reason you described. I will walk around and look at the gravestones, and think about the story behind those gravestones. I bet there are a lot of interesting lives that were lived, and probably some pretty wonderful stories as well

Squirrels don't know about graveyards and I guess they just regard them as great playgrounds.

If only all those stories could be told!

They're lovely. There are a lot of squirrels (foxes and badgers too) where I live and I often see them scampering around with things like carrots in their mouths.....either my neighbours have been feeding them - which of course I'm OK with - or they've been scavenging through the rubbish bins.

I have never been to a graveyard..... people always make it feel so ....haunted... I like your perspective... it is like nature telling us that the graveyard isn't meant to be a sad place..
