I'll get right to it: #8 in my Favorite 80's Jazz Songs is Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays' "As Falls Witchita, So Falls Witchita Falls."
Famed jazz guitarist Pat Metheny, in addition to his solo work, fronted The Pat Metheny Group and collaborated with various artists. His album with Lyle Mays, As Falls Wichita, So Falls Witchita Falls, reached #1 on Billboard's Jazz chart in 1981. Metheny certainly has the credentials, having released three Gold records and has won an astounding 20 Grammy Awards.
"As Falls Witchita, So Falls Witchita Falls" is an epic 20+ minute tune that builds in intensity. It's not something that is easily edited, hence, it's lack of hit status, but it definitely pushes jazz boundaries.
And I love it. A solid #8.

I have some Pat Metheny albums but did not know about this one. I like what was played here.

That album was in contention for my favorite "crazy album titles" series.

And don't forget Everybody Loves the Pilot (Except the Crew) by Jon Astley and Ship Arriving too Late to Save a Drowning Witch by Frank Zappa.

I love music but I'm not listening to jass that much. But I like your post and it made me want to know more about jass. I know only the popular ones, I guess.

You can't go wrong starting with Miles Davis. Kind of Blue is widely considered the greatest jazz album ever made.
