Lightning strike knocked down my connection and damaged my computer.

Three days ago lightning struck very near my house, we had no power for several hours, when power was restored I noticed that my computer was not working but I had Wi-Fi, so I called up the service provider cause I was sure the port of the modem was damaged. After the company changed my modem to an upgraded one, it still did not work so the tech told me that my LAN card port was also damaged so I looked in my junk yard to look for a replacement. Comes to show that lightning would indeed damage our electronics, I told the tech that I have an AVR and he smile and told me it was no match to the lightning and could have been worst. Ever experienced something like this? We are so vulnerable to nature. any nature vulnerability stories? ( photo shows my new upgraded modem, the one with green lights that I got for free "gratis" lol)

Yes, that is why when I am in the Philippines, I get off all the wire of all our electronic gadgets from their suckets. It happened before that my smartphone was damaged when the power was back, when I forgot that I was charging my phone before the brownout.

Oh yes that is why sometimes I shut down the main power of the circuit breaker, sensitive electronics should always have an AVR

Wow, that's a near call. I am afraid of lightening. No, I have never experience a lightening damage. I was once in a lighting storm but was so exhausted that I slept through most of it hidden under my blanket in my tent.God the damage was minimal to your computer.

We have an AVR for each computer, it helps a lot. The only appliance damaged by the lighting has been a refrigerator. Anyway our house insurance covers this kind of damages. We replaced the refrigerator, they paid the bill.

@louievill Even if the insurance covers, it's a big BIG problem if you lose your computer data due to lightning.

Yes here too and the senstive electronics I connect to an AVR but this proved it's not enough, I better think of more ways to protect them or shut them completely in a storm.

And yes, the weathermen said it is not advisable to use our gadgets when there's lightning cause it "attracks" it like a magnet. So be safe! Good thing the service provider was efficient in sending its repairmen.

It can, it's so powerful even if it's not a direct hit it could do some damage, next time I would start unplugging things.

I am sorry to hear that. This shall be a very serious lightning strick. As it caused you no power to use and even the computer was out of work. I don't know how these things can be avoided. Perhaps changing to the plugs that can protect from the lightning strick?

I am installing more AVRs, could have been worst, there was no power cause it damaged a line transformer. Well at least I got a new upgraded modem, better than the old one, it's taller and upright as you can see in the picture so it's cooler cause air passes

He only told me that even the AVR is no match to the lightning especially if it is near, I am thinking of plugging the AVR to another avr before plugging my electronics, perhaps that would lessen the surge. Thank you my friend for the care

It is good that you got the replacement for the damaged part. Lightening is one thing I don't like to hear about its activities. In my country, there are areas prone to this natural calamities and whenever it strikes, it leaves a people crying.
