When my children were young ,my son six and my daughter four years old,I thought it was time they said their prayers before going to bed. So we started with the Lord's Prayer. All went well for about a week .I would say a line and my babies would repeat it after me. This one night we started as usual and all was well till we reached the line........."give us this day our daily bread" My son repeated it but my daughter refused to. I tried several times to make her say it,but she wouldn't. So I asked her why she wasn't repeating the line......pat came the answer " I don't want only bread......I want bread and butter." That was so cute! My grandson was so upset when he found out he was going to be an uncle at the age of six. We learned he thought the moment the baby was born, he would turn into a grown-up man uncle and he wanted to still be a kid!

The reason Jesus said only directed us to pray for our daily bread was because some of of us want butter and some of us want margarine or peanut butter and so we have to tailor the prayer to our own likes and needs.

@jennyjoy Some call the 'Our Father' prayer a model prayer. It lists what to pray for in general. We can personalize it so it fits our situations throughout our life. Notice what Jesus said in Matthew 6:7 Authorized (King James) Version But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

@1hopefulman maybe my little one was wise beyond her years ,so she personalised it to her understanding.
