How important is it to be "Honest"?

One of the places I worked at for a couple of years must have had some issues with my work ethics. I was called to my managers office and given a long but winding talk about how things at the work place operate. The talk was vague but by the end of it What I understood was that everything wasn't always "Black" or "White".There were many "grey"areas and we shouldn't question those. Obviously I didn't follow his advice. So a week later, in a private but direct conversation my immediate superior told me " You are to honest. You will never succeed in life.Sometimes you should look the other way". Have you had a similar experience? Do you think "grey areas " in work related matters are acceptable?

it's just self accountability. in real life nobody cares, money decides whether honest or dishonest being helps.

There are people who care, maybe a small number but it does matter. However, you are correct in saying that money rules.

@jennyjoy small people caring may only work if you are in that circle. for example say people born before 70s they are in midd age and beyond now and they care if you are making money genuinely or not.. but today among new generation, they don't care.. they only check if you are rich and happy or not. so it all depends on your circle. dishonest people can remain in cricle that keeps their lifestyle in check instead of going among people who are honest...that's how politicians, businessmen and thieves survive. at the end money matters.

@skysnap So I see. What a sad life! That means life is an artificial /superficial existence.

Whoa, being "too honest" does NOT mean you will never succeed in life, and I can't believe he even said that. And I agree with those who said things should be equal in the workplace.

It is difficult to believe. Things in most workplaces are not equal at least places were I worked.

If only more of us could be our own bosses, nobody could tell us to look the other way.But then again,we don't need their advice.

@jennyjoy You said the right words, honest people are considered stupid, because they do not take advantage of some situations.

i am not always honest. I kinda agree with the gray area theory. We don't have to look away in the gray areas...but know how to understand WHY the matter is in the gray area.

what i mean is, in every thing that takes place in life...there are two sides to the story right? Sometimes it happens that when we decide to pick one side....there is a degree of injustice happening to the other person....because we are looking at only one side....we are favoring one side more. sometimes there needs to be a middle road....kind of like a compromising path where both get some degree of justice instead of just one person getting all of it. you see what i mean? there is always a reason something falls into this middle path ....also known as gray area.

I actually have been told that I am too honest. Too honest in the fact that sometimes I elaborate when I shouldn't, or don't need to. I am a really honest person...it really is impossible for me to tell a lie. Sometimes, that is not a good thing.

When I told someone that I was going to work as a salesman they said I wouldn't last as I was too honest. However, I found a job as a button salesman and there wasn't any need to lie or exaggerate and so did that for some 40 years. Best to please God than to please man! (Acts 5:29)

I think being honest is the best way to be. But sometimes people just want you to agree with them and not be honest.

bless yer heart, i've been there! i reckon 't depends'n what one perceives 's bein' 'successful' - to me honesty plays a huge part'n such. those 'grey areas' either need to be bleached, 'r tarred :)

I have come across it in the work place too..., it's not very nice being the one that goes against the flow.., a lot of grey areas are because of other pressures...like money..time..and rules and regulations... but it's not fair on the workers to have these grey areas.... but many people do what they feel they must do ... to keep their jobs in this competitive world....

Again, let me borrow the lyrics by Billy Joel from his song Honesty "Honesty is such a lonely word Everyone is so untrue Honesty is hardly ever heard And mostly what I need from you" Sad to say, most people these days tend to forget that Honesty is the best policy, and would "bend" the truth to get their way
