News Flash: It Rained in SoCal Last Night

United States
October 16, 2016 11:00am CST
This was unexpected. A big storm swept through the NorthWest yesterday. Washington and Oregon received the most rain. I’m sure there were some problems, haven’t looked at the news reports yet this morning. NorCal had lots of rain too, but not as much as up north. I heard that SoCal had a 30% chance of rain overnight. I discounted the forecast because it almost never rains here unless the prediction has over 50% chance. This morning I was surprised and pleased that everything is very wet outside. I won’t have to water most of my potted plants. There’s one spot that’s protected from rain, so I’ll water the plants there. I wonder about the hillside areas that burned months ago. Hopefully this was enough rain to get seeds to germinate. Without some vegetation taking root, there will be mudslides once we get real rain. I’m pretty confident nothing which starts to grow now will protect the hills and homes from heavy rains. But we haven’t had many big storms in the last few years. Luckily, they did have a good snow pack in the Sierras last winter to give us drinking water. What is your water situation? Do you need rain, or would it be best for the clouds to make a detour to where I live? Update: Just saw the weather forecast for tonight, rain again at 9:30 tonight, stopping at 10:30. Fingers crossed this is right.

I saw that your area was likely to get rain on the weather station. I'm glad you had some. We are due for much needed rain in a day or two and at the end of the week from that system that hit the West Coast.

You guys always get our left overs. Usually, however, you get more rain than we do. I don't know why that's true, but it is.

@ElizabethWallace We get some lovely Nor'easters that you should be thankful you don't get! We haven't had much rain all summer. Our new lawn is proof!

@DianneN Rain in the summer? What's that? It would be huge headlines if it rained in SoCal in the summer. People would flock to churches fearing the end is in sight. Just kidding, kinda.

@marlina Okay. Thanks for the details. Always good to fix a MyLotter to a specific area.

We didn't have much rain this summer. But the situation isn't critical, not comparable to yours.

It rains in the summer where you live, I've experienced it first hand, but it also rains in the winter. We almost NEVER have summer rains, and not too often have winter rains, so this was cool.

No rain in the Lake Charles area for at least two weeks but since it is fall there is no heatwave either.

We usually get the heat wave, and one will be here for three days this week. Ugh.

@Deepizzaguy Usually when we have this heat, we have bad air, so far so good on the air quality.

No kidding. Shocking only because it rained in Ventura. That means it jumped over your area to hit both south and north of you. Sorry. I grew up there, Van Nuys and Sepulveda. Where are you?

We have had nearly two inches in the last 24 hours and with this series of storms, over five inches for the month. Our average is about 28 inches and we are approaching that now. This amount is more like it was when I first moved here, though forty inches were not uncommon in the 1970s.

@ElizabethWallace Yes, there is no problem with that at this point. Sometimes, the rivers flood in outlying areas.

How is your community handling the situation? Do you have enough storm drains to keep the roads and homes safe? Hope so.

So happy for you folks as I know how desperate you've been for rain- and the fire season was particularly bad there--- I'm in a little part of Southern Ontario that seems to miss all the good rain that the rest of the area gets as it seems to blow right off this corner of lake Ontario so we have not had much rain. I like the rain so am always disappointed when we missed it again~~ however the situation is not anywhere near as bad as yours- Congrats and hope you get more~

We did last night, but the positive effects will disappear quickly as the heat and Santa Ana Winds are going to be back for three days this week. it's October, our "fire" season.

@ElizabethWallace You and Deborah live in a beautiful place and it is well worth it- this would be a little drawback but I'm sure overall it's still way, way, worth it!

Some areas of the Philippines have been hit by a typhoon yesterday. I believe we had too much rain. A detour would be the best option.

You guys always seem to get terrible storms. Why doesn't your government make plans for the water?
