Waste Not, Want Not

The phrase is the perfect description to the water crisis we are having in Africa at the moment : "if you use a commodity or resource carefully and without extravagance you will never be in need" Water - a life supporting commodity and a daily necessity to sustain life! Today I am on the look out for some ECO SMART, Biodegradable and environmental friendly cleaning products, due to the fact that every drop of water must be used, after it is used. Recycled from cleaning to use in the garden or toilets. Not a drop to waste! What would your plan of action be to save water in the home?

have as much drain into the yards to water the garden as possible! I loved having the washing machine water get used for yard watering back with the septic in texas

I'd install something that cut off the shower after a few minutes. My kids could fill a bath with the water they use during their excessively long showers. Just as well they're not home for most of they year.

@WorDazza Now you have me picturing the crocodiles in the shower. Yes, you can have a shower but make it snappy.

I have tried not to make our shower too comfortable, but I must say my family are very good in saving even when its not in a crisis situation.

A bit apart, but efficient, at least if it rains times to times in your place. In my previous house I had a 10m3 tank of rain water in the garden that I was using for watering plants and for the washing machine (I asked to a plumber to connect it and he made no difficulties although it is supposed to be forbidden in France : water companies need money). It lacked of water only once during a summer in 4 years.

it makes for sensible saving - I can imagine that the local water works will loose money but if your water is so freely available then your water shouldnt be that expensive

@Inlemay They forbid it inside a house for health reasons. The truth is that it has been decided because of the lobbying of water companies. Our tap water is more or less expensive and more or less good to drink depending of the place. I have not to complain here because it is still owned by the city, and the water is top quality, coming from a deep karst not polluted. In another place, when the city left the water to a private company, the bill doubled in 3 years.

@topffer I have never bought water anywhere in the world - when I visited France I drank the tap water and had no problems. I have quite a sensitive tummy and I say to people "If I can drink the tap water, you can too"

Have they made ones big enough? I washed the floors today and I used 20litres of water (I decanted the jugs on purpose to see how much it takes) that is enough for 4 households in the Farm towns per day - I felt quite ill knowing that they have so little to cope with. I luckily was able to pour the dirty water out onto my lawn, so my garden got the 20 litres

sadly many folks takes schtuff fer granted - clean water, air, the abundance 'f foods, etc. i catch rain water here, don't use any chemicals to clean/do laundry 'n that gets recycled. i gather 'p water from the sink/tub whilst waitin' fer 't to get hot 'n use that fer drinkin'/cleanin'/waterin' the plants indoors. p.s. love the pta 'n 3 f's :) used to hear that quite oft growin' 'p.

I know I waste a lot of water. Taking showers instead of filling a tub would be a big savings.

@Inlemay Wouldn't do any good. No one seems to know how to spread the water around fairly.

I agree with you. We should really conserve water before it is too late. We have been practicing it at home. We do not throw away the water that we used to wash the dirty clothes. Instead, we use it to water the plants.

My plan is to not have the faucet running while I brush my teeth and also try to take less time in the shower.

We have water restrictors on our shower heads and a few low flow toilets. Taking short showers instead of baths saves water and using rain barrels to collect water after a rain can be used in the garden.

Hi, I want to do more to save water as well, but I can't find better idea except saving the laundry water to mop the floors. May I know do you know more good ways to save waters not only in home but also on public place?

This is a situation that we have not had for a long time in England. However, on the rare occasions that a water shortage has been declared, I have still seen people watering the garden with a hosepipe.

We have five minute timers in the showers to remind us to keep it short. Usually is doesn't take us that long. Hubby and I shower together to save even more water ;). We try to keep an eye on all of our waste as well. For cleaners we choose to use water, baking soda and essential oils if needed. Most of the time basic water will do. I wash the dishes then we use the rinse water to wash things around the house instead of sending it down the drain. It all adds up right?

i don't get stressed out if a light was left on all day, but with clean water flowing down the drain or to the gutter, i feel the wastage keenly.
