Were your parents as weird as mine?

Did your mom or dad try to control you and your friendship using religion like my Mom did? She was using us kids as full time evangelists before we were teenagers. She taught us a lot of good values, to love other people, but really? Everyone else was going to hell?

I think sometimes well meaning parents can go too far. We've tried to raise our kids and grandkids to love God and serve him, but it has to be a willing choice.

I think the emphasis should be on loving people and serving people. That is what Jesus said "if you do it to the least of my brethren, you do it to me."

@JohnyAppleseed You are so right. Jesus taught against the "righteousness" of the Pharisees.

No. My dad was forced to go to church by his mother when he was a kid and my dad said he would never force his kids to go or do anything we didn't want to do. Religion was never really a thing we talked about in my home because we always had more important things to talk about like each other.

Why is it that we focus on the religion part of things but never the other things that our parents taught us? My parents taught me to eat with a spoon, they taught me to use the toilet, they taught me to walk upright and wash my hands often. My parents taught me to be honest, reliable, to pay my bills and not to hurt others. Our parents teach us the things that they want to see in us as people. With that said, I go to church every Sunday and I also did growing up with my parents. My religion is a part of who I am. I choose to see the best in others because of my belief that we are all children of God. My kids also go with me to church and as of yet I have never heard a complaint. I hope that they will keep their religion as part of their lives but ultimately they have the choice. They also have the choice to not do all the other things I have taught them in life. Spoons and toilets are just as optional as religion.

This is good to see the best in others, and to believe that we are all the children of God. That makes us brothers and sisters. Some religions teach that many people are children of the Devil, spiritually, and not safe to associate with.

No my parents weren't that way at all but they raised us to be good people with good morals but I did have friends who had parents that were like your mom.

I am lucky to have my parents. They neither control me by religion and by any means. They have given us freedom to do anything by our own but were always us if anything wrong happens.

No there weren't any restrictions on who I should or should not be friends with but they were protective and weren't very happy with allowing me going out with friends unless it was study related.

My dad was very concerned with my friends, not based on religion though! But he was a critic to most of them. :D
