The Difference Between Medicine And Poison Is In The Dose

Or, another title might be "That Which Keeps You Alive, Can Also Kill You". Many of us take natural and / or synthetic medicines to keep our bodies doing what they should do efficiently. We also take common cold remedies, pain relievers, and other such acute remedies as necessary, But ANYTHING in excess can kill. Let's take water for instance. We are told to be sure and get enough water every day. Some say 64 ounces, some say more, or less. Our bodies NEED the proper amount of water to continue living. Let's not overdo it though. Water flushes toxins out of our system, and keeps our cells hydrated. Well, while it is flushing out toxins, it also flushes out electrolytes ( Potassium, Magnesium, Sodium etc. ) which we need for our nervous systems and muscles to work properly. How can this be poison? Let me give you an example: When I was a nurse on a pediatric floor, a woman brought her infant to the hospital because it was not breathing properly. After many questions and much investigation, and after the infant was placed on a ventilator, we found out that the mother, trying to stretch the infants formula, for lack of money to buy more, had been adding twice the amount of water as was called for. In her mind, she was feeding her baby longer with what she had. The added extra water, flushed out the needed sodium in the tiny little fellow, causing respiratory complications. Doctor's were unable to replete the sodium stores in time, and the baby died. The mother was heart broken. She had no idea she was killing her baby by trying to keep his belly full. So, try to keep everything in perspective. More is not always better. Vitamins are also on the list. Normally, you should be able to get the required amount of vitamins from the food you eat, if you have a fairly balanced diet. Unless blood tests show that you are deficient, you don't need vitamins in pill form. Some of them can store in your body and cause ill effects, or even death. Stay healthy friends. Everything in moderation. I don't particularly like this song, but the title fits this discussion.

How awful for that uneducated mother and poor innocent child! You have shared a very important message. I gave up vitamins when I found out they can do more harm than good when one eats a well balanced diet.

Yes, for the most part, vitamins are just money makers for big companies with false promises and few warnings.

@Marty1 Vitamins are fine if you are deficient, just be careful and don't go hog wild thinking more is better.

@Marty1 Check with your health care provider. They can do blood tests to see if you actually need them.

Very true, somebody was trying to sell me something some time ago and one of her selling line was " you can take as much as you want because it's natural" I rebuked her after giving my lecture similar to this discussion and she never returned

@cindiowens some people do not know what they are talking about, they just parrot what they had been taught in short sales seminars

As one myLotter pointed out cyanide is natural too, but we certainly wouldn't take that. We can so over load as to make our systems toxic and we become ill, depressed etc...

I never put anything unnecessary into my body - as you say, we usually get enough vitamins etc just from eating normally. I'vw read about an excess of water killing people, but that poor mother.

Very good advice, Cindi. Most things are okay in moderation, but very few are okay in excess.

The only thing I can think of that would be good in excess is money, but I know that would have its own downfalls.

You might have felt sick due to the heat, OR if the water was really cold.

I always take a vitamin the morning after I do some heroic drinking, but thats about it. I try to take as few pills as possible.

I will say, at times we do need medications, but you are right. Doctors are pushing them because that's where the money is at. Do you really believe that there has been no cure for cancer found? Of course there has, but cancer is a zillion dollar industry. They would lose too much money if they cured it.

All this very good information is coming out, this is a good post by the way, lately I saw something on Juice. You know that concentrated liquid that isn't what we were made to do. Nothing like real fruit and just the right amount of sugar too.

@cindiowens This information source actually said even real juice was not natural as it was in concentrated form if consumed in abundance would be equal to like eating 20 oranges in one sitting and who does that?

Yes, there is very little real juice on the market. it has all been reconstituted from concentrates and sugar added plus all sorts of nitrites and nitrates and other chemicals. YUK!

i can't e'en imagine the guilt that momma went through'n the sufferin' 'f that babe.... yer correct, all'n moderation. sadly i've gotta take supplements due to health issues that prevent my body from absorbin' many vitamins/minerals from foods. such does require frequent tests to ensure nothin' 'tis outta whack. same with water, i've gotta drink more'n the 'norm' due to severe crohn's 'n then balance that out with supplements.'tis tricky to keep't all'n line 't times.

@enlightenedpsych2 the pesticides're a worry fer certain - 'long with all the chemical compounds they treat 'em with claimin' such to be 'fertilizer'. most'f our farmlands're completely deplete 'f the natural nutrients our soils possessed e'en jest 20 years 'go. no crop rotations 'n poor farmin' practices (all supported by the government, aka: taxpayers) 've led to much destruction not jest'f the beneficial critters, but the nutrient content 'f our foods. aint so much 'bout 'rocket science' 's 't seems to be 'bout folks makin' money howe'er they can get by with :(

My hubby and I always count our blessings because we don't need any medication. Last winter we even didn't get sick. When we do have a problem we look toward herbal solutions.

A lot of times to many do not go by their doctors orders as well and that can lead to trouble also like you mentioned about water. A lot of medicine will say to drink a certain amount of water daily while on it. Medicine can help us but it we misuse it can lead to trouble.

If you are thirsty, drink. If you are not urinating enough, drink. Just don't force yourself. Your body should know what you need, and it will tell you.

@cindiowens - Ms Cynthia - Truth be told, almost anything in too great a quantity can kill you - too much to eat, too much medicine, too much sleep, and too much of too much. -Gus-

@enlightenedpsych2 - Ms Erica - Doggone it. Now I have to look up that "Oracle of Delphi" stuff. Now I will have to turn off the video tape of the football game I made the other night - and just when we were winning, too. As inscribed on the plaque at the temple, as I now have noted, are words to the effect, "Nothing in excess." Obviously, those words were not intended to describe the odor of the huge and rotting python carcass in the chasm. Ain't history something when it is so nicely made up and humorously presented? -Gus-

@enlightenedpsych2 - Ms Erica - Logic tells us that for every winner there must be a loser. So, in answer to your question, we never fail to win, depending on which of those we are, of course. (As the TV voice announced the final score, I imagined that I was smelling the stench of that huge, rotting python, another great loser who had the place named after himself or herself, or both (if that is how it is for snakes.) -Gus-

@enlightenedpsych2 Rolaids for example has been questioned for being linked to dementia due to the aluminum content. Rolaids has since removed this from their recipe, or at least from the ingredients list.
