Perusing some videos on YouTube, I found that some people are talking about the flat earth theory. Having been living in Africa for 9 years, I missed out on this one! Are we still a globe or are we flat? Can anyone enlighten me and why are some people now saying it's flat?

Basically, a spherical Earth doesn't match with their interpretation of the Bible (or the Koran in some cases). So they come up with convoluted and implausible reasons to justify what they think, usually for religious reasons. Anyone who has been south of the Equator can prove them false. Heck, anyone who has been in a noticeably different time zone can.
The modern Flat Earth concept originated in the 19th century in Britain. A surveyor carried out the same experiment done by a Flat Earther and proved so conclusively that the Earth was spheroid that, until satellites were launched, it was actually the textbook proof for the world being a sphere (he was actually bet that he couldn't prove it by a Flat Earther; said Flat Earther afterwards wound up in prison after threatening to kill the surveyor. He didn't like being proved wrong).

Wow, what an idiot to threaten to kill someone for that. I think you are right and that it is for religious reasons, although I have read that flat earthers are also conspiracy theorists. I do find it all interesting, but wonder what is the actual truth.

@janemarie There is some overlap with conspiracy theorists, but they are generally separate.
If you've been south if the Equator, you've seen constellations that can't be seen north of it. You can also see the sky rotate around a different pole. This cannot happen by any sane method if the Earth is flat. Everything will be visible from anywhere. If it's daylight one place, it will be daylight everywhere.
I actually worked out that a conspiracy about the Earth being flat would require the cooperation of approximately 7.459 billion people in the conspiracy. Frankly, it's more plausible that we're living in the Matrix. (In fact, for the Earth to be flat, we probably would have to be living in the Matrix.)

Still there are many people who find fault with the Theory of Relativity. We can not do anything with such people.
