Not quite what I expected

Whilst on our trip to France and Spain my friend and I took copious amounts of photographs (my friend is the photographer) and I kept a diary of where we had been, what we ate, and what we saw. At the beginning of this week I decided we needed an Album in which to store all our memories. I checked online and found an album with 64 pages and maps. It was actually called a Travel Journal Album. I thought this would be perfect for storing all our memories and photographs. I ordered my special album and was informed it would take 5 days to be delivered. Imagine my excitement when I was informed that my parcel would arrive in 2 days time. I stayed home on the second day and waited for my huge album with 64 pages and maps to be delivered. When the post lady came I noticed her putting a small parcel in the letterbox. This was rather disconcerting because I knew a photo album couldn't fit in there. I hoped this was not the parcel I was expecting, unfortunately it was. When I opened it, it contained a small Diary/Journal, which when my son spanned his hand over it, the book was covered. And the maps were even smaller. At a pinch I can possibly use some of the journal pages in the new album which I now have to purchase. With regard to keeping track of stories and photos, one idea is to post yourself a postcard every day from wherever you are and write on the back what you did on that particular day. Then bind them when you return and you will have a journal of your trip. Complete with photos, stamps and a run-down of each day's events.

But why didn't you ever attach a picture here of your vacation to France and Spain ?

I used to send postcards to my parents and they gave them back to me when I returned to keep with my photos. I had a 5-week trip to Australia in 1998 and did that then. Unfortunately I have now lost them somewhere; I thought for a long time that they must be in one of the many boxes but when, after 6 years, we finally unpacked the last box in our old house I realised they had disappeared.

@Fleura What a great idea of your parents for you to keep the postcards you sent them with your photos. What a shame you have lost your photos from Australia. Perhaps you could come back 'down under' and take some more.

That's one reason I don't order things. More often than not, a person receives something that is not what was expected. I would rather go to a shop and find what I need, even though it takes more time and effort. I think that's a great idea about posting a postcard every day but that's not as easy as it sounds. Especially from a foreign country. Trying to find stamps and a post office isn't the easiest thing to do, I have discovered in my travels. However, I usually DO purchase post cards wherever I go and I have a nice collection.

@IreneVincent I wish I had thought of this when I was in France. Once many years ago I went to Israel and was very poor, all I could afford was postcards, so at least I have something to remind me of that trip

Sounds like quite the trip. I am sorry that when your parcel arrived it was not at all what you were expecting. That happens sometimes when you order things online. I like the idea of posting yourself a postcard. I must remember that for my next trip.

@Happy2BeMe I'm going to get a Travel ALBUM and use some of the pages in this funny little journal thingy. I do think that idea of postcards would really work if only I could remember when I am away.

We used to send to ourselves a postcard from the places we loved more. I also wrote a diary, it's nice to go through those pages many years after.

@HAPPSINGH Those diaries are private, they are about what we visited, where we had lunch and dinner. It's just to remember.

That's the trouble with buying things sight unseen, you never know for sure if it's what you want. That's an excellent idea about sending yourself a postcard everyday - you wouldn't even need to actually send them, would you? Just write them, then put them away until you get home.
