People say blood is thicker than water...does this hold true all the time??? Let me know your thoughts...

I was in a troubled situation years ago. My family didn't want anything to do with me. The only thing that is family to me is my friend whom I've known for a long time. He was there for me when I needed advice, overall a good friend.
