What If We Walled Off America?

There has been a lot of talk the past year about building a wall between the US and Mexico, thereby sealing our borders. This weekend, an art installation was put up in Laguna Beach. It was called "1/4 Mile Arc" and consisted of gorgeous mirrored poles. It was actually pretty interesting and I plan to go back tomorrow morning to watch them take the art installation down. However, as I looked at this photo of the poles in the sand, I realized that this is what it would take to actually close our borders ... a solid wall along every beach in America. There is already a very secure wall between California and Mexico ... but it does no good because people can arrive by boat. A year ago, a boat dropped off a group of people during the International Surfing Championship in Huntington Beach. There were police and television cameras that witnessed it, but with thousands of people at the beach that day, the boat passengers simply mingled into the crowd and couldn't be found. Their nationality could not be determined. A few years before that, a group of teenage girls having a pajama party at a beach house saw a group of Asian men being dropped off by boat in the middle of the night. The men swam to shore and began walking into Laguna Beach. The girl hosting the party woke her parents, the Dad called the police and they arrived quickly ... but too late to catch any of the men, who had already disappeared into town. Earlier this year, a boat full of drugs from Mexico was caught off the coast of MAINE, so full of contraband boats from other countries are not confined to California. In addition, small abandoned boats from Mexico are found all along the California coast, as well as the coastal states that surround the Gulf of Mexico. In fact, last year alone three abandoned boats were found on the beach at Camp Pendleton Marine Base. Apparently, the immigrants have no qualms about slipping onshore under the noses of the U.S. Marine Corp. So ... the way I see it ... the only way to actually seal our borders is to build a wall around our entire country, closing off ALL 22,000 miles of our beaches. The posts in the photo above are attractive. They are made of mirrors. I don't think an actual coastal wall would be nearly as pretty ... and there certainly would not be gaps between the posts to allow us to slip into the water to swim or surf. Is that what we want? Perhaps we need to explore better ways to deal with immigration ... because a wall between Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico is not going to be much more than a PR stunt.

What an interesting installation. We have 'boat people' trying to get to our shores but it is much harder to get into Australia than for Mexicans to get into the US.

Yes, I am sure it is harder for people to slip into the US than it is into Australia ... since it is a giant island and pretty far from most other countries.

@enlightenedpsych2 It's very derogatory and yes, it is the only way for them to get here. They are very desperate and pay thousands to board some leaky boat which might sink, be attacked by pirates or they get picked up by our navy before reaching here. Our immigration policy is inhumane and needs to change but so far all efforts have been futile.

Illegal immigrants are flocking into Europe from the north Africa. They come with boats, many of them die before reaching Italy or Greece. It is a horrible situation here in Europe. We have thousands and thousands of people coming in every day and some countries, like Austria and Hungary are thinking to build walls to stop them.

Yes, the desperate people from Syria are creating a serious problem for Europe. I hope they find a solution for those Syrian people.

@DeborahDiane If the problem was ONLY the people from Syria. The immigrants are coming in from Syria, Lybia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Nigeria, Gambia, Mali... all those regions are only poor, there is not a war going on. The problem is they are bringing in Europe diseases that were forgot from decades, like scabies. I do not dare to get on a public transport when I go to Italy.

@LadyDuck - Oh, my! It has been about 10 years since our last trip to Europe. I'm sad to hear things have gotten so bad there because of the immigration problems. I don't know what the solution is ... with so many horrible men running those poor countries into the ground.

An impractical solution - those people would still find a way, and a wall would work both ways. It would keep Americans in.

@DeborahDiane Oh yes, I can see how that would be funny!

@jaboUK - There was a cartoon circulating here in the U.S. for awhile. It showed the Mexicans building a wall to keep Americans from crossing into their country after Trump gets elected. It was funny ... but felt a little too true!

I will be interested what Hillary does when she wins this week. I like her ideas. I love the art.

I hope that Hillary is able to flip the Senate to the Democrats. That will improve her chances of getting some of her ideas through Congress.

Exactly, which is what I think his run for Pres is/was. Hopefully Hillary will win and if we are lucky, he will disappear to start his own TV station, which I will not watch.

I'm glad you like the picture ... and that you can see how ineffective a wall would be. There are better options for dealing with illegal immigration ... such as organizing a guest worker program. Here in California, we let them get special international driver's licenses and require them to buy auto insurance. Then, they can drive legally, they are insured, we get their fingerprints, and we know who they are and where they live. It works very well here.

@just4him - George and Jeb Bush have wanted to make this program available across the nation, but too many people who know nothing about dealing with immigrants in a logical, businesslike and caring manner are opposed to it.

Trump will never get a wall built. That's big talk from a blowhard. I really hope that buffoonery was an act. Just to be fair I detest the other candidate as well.

@DeborahDiane The great thing is he can't do most of these things without the agreement of the House and or Senate. Getting money approved for that purpose seems close to impossible. I guess he could use his own personal fortune. I'd rather him use his own money than ours!

He'll probably start one ... or add on to a section that is already there ... just to make a good showing that he tried. I don't expect much more than that, though.

if'n folks wish to come to our country (whether they've intent to stay 'r not...) they'll come. solid walls 40 ' high 'n electrified aint gonna stop 'em 's they've already gone underground 's @DaddyEvil shared. they need to spend those funds (by the way, where t'was all that money gonna come from? china?) to rebuild our infrastructure 'n buy america back from other countries that've been sold off through the years - that which most americans aint e'en aware's occurred.

@DeborahDiane they need to implement such nationwide, give those folks'n opportunity to get their learnin' fer citizenship if'n they desire to stay. there's guest worker visa's 'round these parts. folks come from new zealand, south africa 'n australia e'ery year fer harvestin'. that'd be my 'xtent 'f knowin' 'bout 'em, lol. yepperz, a waste 'f money 'n prolly built from steel made'n china....

@crazyhorseladycx - We used to have a guest worker program about 50 years ago, and it worked pretty well. Most Mexicans went back to their country when they weren't working here. Now they are afraid to go back, because it is so hard to get back in.

From what I understand a stricter surveillance is required. A wall would restrict the people of USA too. Not just illegal immigrants

@Hannihar - I understand your situation is different from ours. The Mexicans and South Americans who come here do not want to murder us. They mostly just want to be able to take our low-paying jobs ... like working on farms, in barns, in construction, as gardeners, etc. Most of them are good, hard-working people.

@Hannihar - Yes, I agree that our situations are very different. I know your country lives with a constant threat from its neighbors. Our country doesn't have that threat although, to listen to our president, you would think we did.

@DeborahDiane Jews here hire Arabs and then the Arabs turn on them. Our situations are very different. We have to build the walls to protect ourselves against those that want us gone.

I love how the artist did that. It really seems like a visual reality check. I don't get how we can sit and say that no one can come to the USA. Unless you are a native american, your family came from elsewhere. even then, through DNA research we know the native Americans were the result of travelers too. So why be so rude about sharing? One day, people will be traveling to other planets and no one will care about Mexico or United States. We will all just be humans from the planet Earth.

@Daelii - I agree with you completely! In addition to the points you made, Mexico, Canada and South America have always been very hospitable to Americans. I lived for a while in Mexico during the Vietnam War. Many injured veterans were living there at the time, because they could not afford to live in the United States on their small disability payments. Today, the people who took in those veterans are not welcome in our country. I think it is sad.

@DeborahDiane They are great people, with a few bad apples. Just like the USA is mostly great people with a few bad apples. I'm so appalled at times, to be an American. Look at how quickly they were to get support to our people with the hurricanes? meanwhile we want to build a wall and give them rude gestures when they need help with the earthquakes. :(
