Do you fall in love too easily?

There's a song out there that has become a jazz standard. It's called "I Fall in Love Too Easily." Listening to the Keith Jarrett Trio's version of the song got me to thinking about whether I fall in love too easily. I actually think I fall in love too slowly. The advantage is that I don't have a ton of baggage to haul around. The disadvantage is that I also fall OUT of love slowly, meaning that I'll take long breaks from the whole romance thing at times. I have a friend (divorced) who has a new beau every few months. My hunch is that she has a hard time being alone, even though she has interests (art and photography) that benefit from "alone time." What about you? Do you fall in love too easily?

@jstory07 Not too hurt. At the time, there was a guy that I was hurt by him dumping me, but when I look back on it now, I know it was really for the best.

Did falling in love quickly lead to problems?

My daughter told me recently that one of her room mates is bouncing around between guys. I told her that was not necessarily a bad thing. You meet many until you find the right one. I went out with a guy on one date. On that first date he revealed that he was divorced with two children and had had a vasectomy with no desire to have more children. Why would I continue in that relationship when it WOULD end in heart break because I definitely wanted another child? For myself, I either fall in love too easily, am too weak, or just don't want to be alone. Perhaps it's a combination of all three. In any case I didn't make very good decisions with any of the guys I was with. However, I did know when to cut it and run. I don't know. I think I'm just confused about myself, about life, about love. I've always said my father set the bar high as to what a husband is and I had high expectations only to be disappointed. That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.

I agree..it is pretty much coincidence that right marbles are around at the right time and we can't say wait...when the right person is around...we can't time love.

@TheHorse .. I think it is a myth that we can know another person. I mean, my experience can make me read a person in some light. But there is a lot more to a person than that, and even that person cannot reveal everything about their personality or liking within a few months or years. Then again, people change..to me a person who falls in love easily is just naive and innocent person..who has not learned how to read another person, and once we start reading another person or considering qualities we like or dislike, it ceases to be love...and becomes what shall I say more of a compatibility alignment. Interesting topic..pony.

I can find someone charming or interesting upon first meeting. But love takes a lot of conversation and getting to know the person.

I don't suppose that I do, since I have been married to the same person for 40 years.

Did it take awhile for him to capture your heart? Or did you jump right in and fall in love?

@TheHorse We went the "friend" route first. I was in a relationship with someone else when we met.

I wasn't one to fall in love easily. I always had this guard up to protect my heart and it wasn't easy for me to let it down but the the man who is my fiance came along and swept me off my feet. It was love at first sight. I knew as soon as I met them that he was the one. We have been together almost six years now.

@TheHorse Yup! If they don't take some time getting to know the real me (even though all they'll ever see is the real me) first, then they really aren't worth my time or trouble.

I don't now of course but maybe I did when I was younger. I was flattered by anyone who was nice to me but of course that isn't love.

Really, Judy? Uhm... I want to ask why, but can't think of a nice (read polite) way to ask, without it sounding like I am being mean when that isn't how I want my question taken. (What I am trying to say is you aren't an ugly woman, so why flattered by anyone who was nice to you?) Obviously, you have a good personality and you have always (I understand I've only known you about a year... ) seemed intelligent and interesting to me... what guy wouldn't like to get to know you better? Please don't be offended by my lack of tact here. I am having trouble tonight, but am very curious about this.

No. It took a while for me to even tell my boyfriend that I loved him because I don't tell people I love them if I don't and we have been dating for almost 4 years. He told me within the first few months of dating and when he would say it I would just say okay until I was ready to say it. He says he knew right away that he loved me, but it took me longer to know for sure if I loved him and wanted to actually be with him. Now almost 4 years later and I couldn't see myself without him now.

@TheHorse I'm not afraid to say it I'm just not the kind of person to just throw it around when I don't mean it. I love a lot of things and a lot of people, but of course there are different kinds of love and the love I have with him is serious love and a love I want to last so I'm not going to say it if I don't mean it. I am so tired of always looking on my Facebook or other social media and people only date someone a week and are talking about how much they love that person and then the next day or next week they hate that person and are "in love" with someone else. When in reality they have no idea what love really is because if they did they wouldn't just throw that word around. Eventually, it will lose its meaning for those people and then they complain about how no one loves them.

When I was young, I did fall in love so easily. The problem was while I was still loving one, I started loving another one. And while I was still so in love with the first and second ones, I started falling so in love with a third one. It was not one at a time . . it was 3 at the same time. Whew! But those were the days . .Now I am just in love with one!

@TheHorse That was when I was in my early 20s . . . so, for sure when you were in your 20s, you likewise had a lot of energy to fall in love with not just 3 but 6 or even more at the same time. There is an actor in the Philippines who got 68 children from a dozen women . . Whew!
