Field of Light, Uluru, Australia

While we were at Uluru in central Australia recently, we attended the Field of Light, an installation of some 50,000 slender stems crowned with frosted glass spheres. LED lighting illuminates the area from dusk.
Lighted pathways led us on a 600 metre path through and among the lights which changed colour from time to time as we walked among them. The installation is the creation of Bruce Munro, a London artist, who visited Uluru in 1992. It has been very popular, with hundreds of people walking through the wonderland each night.
Munro saw in his mind a landscape of illuminated stems that, like the dormant seeds in a dry desert, 'bloom' under the night sky, under a blanket of southern stars. The installation was solar powered with 36 solar panels powering 144 projectors. The lights took six weeks to install.
'Field of Light' could only be viewed by booking a tour. A bus took us to and from the area. This was cheaper than paying through the nose, so to speak, for a camel ride which was another choice on offer. We also didn't worry about the fancy dining option as we didn't want to take out a mortgage just to pay for a meal.
Because of the danger of people tripping in the half-light, the use of tripods was forbidden making it very difficult to get effective photos. Vince held his camera as steady as possible against one of the few small trees in the area and managed a few nice shots. I thought I'd found him a lovely solid tree stump of about the right height to lean on but luckily before I got to it, it turned out to be a man bent over taking close-ups of the lights. I wonder what he would have thought to have had a camera perched on his back?
If you search 'field of light' on Google you will see incredibly pretty photos of this very lovely installation.

Quite spectacular (and your photo shows it very well), though I'm sure that it is far more magical and real when you are actually there. I can't help being a little concerned about what the Aboriginal view might be on this 'invasion' of what, to them, is a very sacred place by a foreign artist, however, it's probably best to just enjoy it for what it is while respecting the sacred nature of the place that us Westerners cannot hope to understand.
There are many videos on YouTube (some of which are pretty bad!) but I thought that this official one, which has Bruce Monroe speaking about the installation was one of the best:
Feel the inspiring magnitude of the vast night sky, the overwhelming presence of the majestic rock. As darkness falls and Uluru is thrown into silhouette, fi...

Thanks for putting up the link - and such a good one too. I hope others take advantage of your kindness and will view it.
There is an aboriginal 'board' who has equal management powers with government officials of the whole of the Uluru/Kata Tjuta National Park. In addition, I think it is 50% of the Northern Territory is now owned by indigenous tribes. We saw lots of signs on roads and road reserves saying 'aboriginal owned land - no trespassing'.
I can only guess that some proposals the aboriginals baulk at and others they allow - maybe with compromises. Certainly the income generated by such events seems to overcome objections somewhat regularly.

That was very kind of @hereandthere to suggest the post. I guess living in Australia, much of what I see is of interest to those not from here.

As if I was brought to that lovely site as I read each word you wrote!
You & your Vince were so lucky to be there!
Me? The only display of lights I get to see here are those from (gosh, I forgot how those are called here)! Sorry. But, they do that by lighting those sticks then they shoot upwards & split into many colorful lights!

@JudyEv You do too? Oh, thank you! I thought it's only me who suffers from that.
Thank you again, Ms. Judy!
This is one reason why I seldom write here. I already have the topic but as I hold my cp & logged-in to MyLot, after few scrolls, the topic slips from my mind!

@crazyhorseladycx Maybe they fenced the 'roos and emus out of the area. Imagine the damage they could do as all the connecting wires were above ground and many were lit up as well creating swirly patterns on the ground.
