Unwanted files sent by fake client.

I am using my handy phone at the moment due to some issue with the main laptop. I don't want to open my laptop, am afraid it will connect to the other laptop with issue and steal all the files.
Issue is someone pretended to be a client and sent us file and it turn out it is a RANSOMWARE. All files are gone on the other laptop, they stole it. Good thing some old files are save in cloud storage but the new files are totally gone. They come up with telling us to pay $500 in order to get all those files back. ?? Are they nuts?
Have anyone experience this kind of issue? If so I would be glad hearing or discussing it.

That sounds so scary! I have never dealt with that situation and I would have no idea where to begin if that happened.

@DesirousDreamer We would too if we were working on the big project. Thankfully no big project at the moment. We are waiting for tomorrow cause today is Sunday and shop is close. So we cannot seek help at the moment.

So sorry to hear about this. Hope you retrieve your files back.
I haven't experienced it and I hope that I don't come across something similar.

@MsPinkU paying the money will only create more trouble for you and would make you more prone to further attacks in the future.

@allen0187 exactly, and if we pay, there is no guarantee that we all get our files back.
