Moonrise, Moonset and the 2016 Supermoon

The second and biggest supermoon of 2016 will be seen tonight, November 14, Monday here in the Philippines (6:22 AM, Eastern Standard Time in the US).
I live in the city all my life, no mountains, fields or water, and have always wondered about two things:
How come I've never seen here in the capital a huge full moon like the pictures I always see that have the dark small outlines of trees, houses and people on the bottom?
Have you ever seen the moon rise or set over the water? Is the experience the same as sunrise and sunset?
During full moons and high tides, do you like going to the beach? Is it easier for fishermen to catch fish?
From the Pagasa/DOST website, I learned that moonrise tonight, November 14, (for those in Metro Manila, Philippines) starts at 5:22 pm, "perigee, the moon’s closest point as it orbits earth, at 07:21 pm, then full moon at 09:52 pm," so I will be checking out the moon at those times.
Aside from learning about moonrise and moonset, I also learned a new word: "syzygy, the scientific name for when the earth, sun, and moon line up as the moon orbits earth," thanks to the NASA/Science website.

i was out late afternoon, yesterday, and while on the footbridge, i looked up and saw the moon. it was white and big even though it sky wasn't dark yet.

@magallon i think a "real" camera would capture it better, unlike using mobile phones, but i will still try. hehe.

I saw it right outside my windows. It was big, bright and beautiful! But after few minutes, the big moon was like moving and disappearing from sight so I had to change my location. Obviously the earth not the moon was moving so I had to chase the supermoon.

@hereandthere hahaha so were you alone in chasing the supermoon? Me, only my family seemed to care because my neighbors did not seem to mind or maybe not aware about the Supermoon.

I have seen many moons, over mountains, water, buildings, in the country and from a plane. I didn't catch the last one here though as it was raining. I have seen many eclipses too. The moon fascinates me and makes me realise how insignificant and small we all are. We all see the same moon wherwever we are and it helps to make distances seem smaller too.

@mysdianait here's a link to what we can see this december
The December Supermoon or what astronomers call as the waxing gibbous moon is the third lunar event of this year where the moon is at its closest to earth with only 222,738 miles away. The Supermoon occurs on Dec. 12 at 1:25 pm ET, but reaches its full pha

I've seen a few times the moon rise from the sea but unfortunately, I did not have my camera with me. About fishing - it's during full moons when fishermen don't have any catch.

so you find moonrise pretty too? but they're best captured with a camera, than a phone, right?
i guess the fish can tell when it's full moon and high tide, so they stay at the bottom so they won't be seen.

@sunrisefan when the moon was rising, i was annoyed by the leaves and wires, so i walked up the street towards it.
your simple point-and-shoot camera still took much better pictures than a cellphone camera where it's only a tiny white dot on a black screen.

@hereandthere You're right - the moon is best captured by a camera and much better when the camera is a DSLR unlike mine which is only a point and shoot one. I still prefer taking sunrise shots because I can integrate it with other scenery or subject and even shoot it behind some leaves for a little artistry hehehe!

Cool new word and I always like to learn something new. Its cool to see the moon and enjoy watching the moon set and rise; specially, when I'm in the country so peaceful.

i feel so envious of those where bodies of water, mountains, forests and field are nearby.
when i come across new stuff here, i look them up, so i can come back and ask them some more about it.
what i like about syzygy is it has no vowels like rhythm.

I'm seeing the super moon right now, I'm outstretching my hands, holding a ruler.
The moon's diameter for me is just 0.6 cm or roughly 0.25 of an inch. Not something to say Wow. and it is hidden behind a thin layer of clouds. :-(
My arms reach is about 65 cm or 26 inch almost. So, if I stretch out my arms holding a ruler to measure the moon, it looks as big as a traffic light in my neighborhood.

@hereandthere What was the diameter ? Did you measure it ? Do you have anything you can compare the moon to ?

i looked for the moon earlier this evening when it was rising. the "horizon" was the end of our street and it looked really big.
now it's almost 9pm here. i stepped out and it's now much higher in the sky, so it looks smaller, but now i also see is an orange ring around it, like a hula hoop.
